FITTING THE GALLERY ENHANCMENT

Hi Team, the painting is now finished. This session will cover the fixing together of the front ply and the rear ply in all cases ( rear Gallery and 2 side Galleries)and then to achieve the correct curvature on the three parts.

It is important during this process to take your time, "test and try" the parts as we go, this is not a race and we are not working to any time scale above all enjoy the build as I amBigGrin

POINT 1)

Prepare 8x lengths of 5 x 2 timber (this will be used to protect the paint work on the front ply parts ) cut them just short of the width of the side Galleries:-

POINT 2)

"IT IS ESSENTIAL YOU GLUE THE 2 HALVES OF THE PLY TOGETHER ON A FLAT SURFACE," (and not curved on the ship) this is to ensure the windows aline spot on.

POINT 3)

I have used PVA adhesive (wood Glue) and not Super glue, I find PVA works better for me.
Place a quantity of adhesive on some scrap wood and apply an even layer onto the part keeping the adhesive away from the windows.(I used a cotton bud for this purpose )
Then clamp the parts together as per the photos:-

CURVING THE PARTS

POINT 6)

This is the most `tricky` part of the process, you really do need to be patiente all the way through TAKE YOUR TIME and "try and test"

I have never used plank benders ( some people get great results with these ) I prefer to use methods I have used from way back when, either steam, hot water or heat from a candle, and then a natural drying process, you will notice all the way through my builds I do not use any fancy tools.

POINT 7)

Take 2 plastic cups or beakers
Then using the spout of a boiling kettle run the side gallery part through the steam, painted side up( mind your fingers) you can use a pair of tweezers.
Do this between 6 to 10 times (duration each time the kettle boils) when the part is moist and plyable, place it between the 2 cups (one inside the other) in the position shown in the photo:-

CURVING THE PARTS

POINT 8)

Ok Team leave the parts in the cups for two days to dry out thoroughly.
When you take them out they should look like this:- (PLEASE NOTE no cracking of the paint or splitting of the wood, if you use Admiralty paints you will be fine)

CURVING THE REAR GALLERY

POINT 9)

We are almost through this session only the rear to curve.
This curvature is very small, we use part 79 from the DeaG VICTORY parts and fit it as instructed in the magazine instructions.
Fitting this part 79 gives the exact curve to the rear Gallery that enables it to fit the other parts already fitted to the rear of the ship, mark off with pencil where the part is being fitted and fix the part with adhesive:-

Hi Mike!
That's a very impressive 'bending' procedure you've got there, so simple and like you said, no super-duper tools required for a perfect result!
I'll remember that one (if I ever get a ship with a wooden stern gallery)!

The DelPrado galleries would need a blow torch set on full to bend them into shape!BigGrin

Best Wishes
