Hi Mo,

Hope i caught you before you got to far with your beakhead, the plastic pieces you are putting on, go on the outside of the uprights, not the inside. the upright parts are wrong in the kit, if you check Magpie's, Moriarty's and the later pictures in James Choi build you will see that they scratchbuilt the upright's to get the right effect.

It would be ashame to see a brilliant build, look bad because of the beakhead, keep up the good work.

Regards,

Andre

Thanks for the advice on that, but yes you were to late, Job was already done, I was following a picture of James Choi's build, If his timbers are on the outside then he must have changed it, also the picture's on the instructions clearly show them on the outside, But I must agree they look better on the outside. Dilema or what. Do I rip it apart 💣 Or leave it, As this is my first real build, I think I am going to leave it, for the meantime anyway. The cut outs in the v frames are all going to have to get filled and sanded, I will do this over the next week or so and see how she looks, In the meantime I think I will go and drown my sorrow's.

On a more positive note, I have started the ladder access, Or is it positive, Because the ladder's clash with one on the gunports, so I have had to move the ladders along the hull a bit.

Thanks Andre, This is all a big learning curve, and if I had read your post earlier, I may well of done it the other way. But this won't be put in any museum, and I am generally really happy with it,

Cheers. Mo. BigGrin

Hi there Mo, you have done a good job on that beakhead and the guys are right about the constuction all being on the outside. I think if you look further into David Chio,s build you might find that he did not like the plan build and changed it. At the end of the day it is still a first class effort and if you like it thats all that matters. Well done again MoCool

Well done a bit recently, I am concentrating on the bowsprit just now, trying to get it all made up but not fixing it to the ship.

First I used the angle template to get the dowel to the correct angle, Then I marked on the vertical marking's that I needed to get the cut out done,

I put a couple of saw drafts in to the lines and reduced the dowel to shape, really just filing away at it.

And again at the front end I cut and filed away to get the section to the correct profile.

I put 2 small saw draft's in one end of the dowel, at 90 degrees to each other, this enabled me to put the steel rule in to the saw draft, and keeping the steel rule either level or plumb, this enabled me to file the end of the dowel to the square profile.

Again using the angle jig I was able to put the collar on keeping it plumb.

And a bit of filing required.

Looks good to me.

Again giving the walnut a coat of stain before fitting the threads.

Fitting the blocks to hold the ropes

Preparing the deadeyes.

Will post more later.

Don't know what you call these things, it's the rope that goes round and round.

Its to reinforce the ropes at the deadeyes.

I coiled the thread around a drill, then put some thin superglue on to it, then quite quickly pulled the thread of the drill. I will make a jig for this as this method was not ideal, sticks to your fingers

I used a safety blade to cut them to length.

I tied the deadeye to the thread, then superglued the end of the thread to make it go hard, and cut a 45degree angle on it, I then passed the thread through the rope sleeve, same with the other thread, and pulled it up tight to the deadeye, using pva to hold in place.

Tying the deadeyes to the bowsprit

Thats the position at the moment, will crack on and get on with the building now, Will post again soon,

Mo

Help required. I am trying to tie the blocks on to the bowsprit, As you can see from the drawing below, the block is tied to the dowel, but between the dowel and the end of the block, there is a bit of rope about 5mm long, i.e. the block is not tied directly to the dowel, I have tied the block to the dowel as you can see from the 2nd picture, can anyone help on how I can achieve the correct detail.

Thanks Mo

Hi Mo. Excellent build and she looks great. Good attention to detail. Well done. I do beleive the look you are after can be achieved by leaving a longer tail after you have tied off to the block. You then use the tail to tie down on the dowel with 5mm required inbetween.
