This is the flag raising by the 6 names mentioned, so that part is correct. Not sure if it was the Time magazine cover that you mentioned. But they are memorialized in a different way. Ger C was close, but not quite right. Model boats built so far:-

I watched a film about this, it was staged after the actual event and there was some controversy as to who actually raised the flag, and i think one was killed or something....

Could it have been the award of the Photographic Pulitzer prize for the actual original photo (the first one awarded to a photograph in the same year it was taken) or the issue of a 1945 US postage stamp bearing the famous image? The Iwo Jima monument is outside Arlington Cemetary Virginia not DC as Ger said. The original planters of the flag couldn't be found or were killed & the photograph & this monument are a staged event, apparently the actual even t was just a couple of GI's sticking a stick in the ground with "Old Glory" tied to it....you gotta hand it to the yanks they know how to stage things!! Well done Rob.. As I said, Ger was close. What do you mean the Americans know how to stage things? I'm saying nothing of the moon landings etc Model boats built so far:-

Why did the British consider Singapore to be impregnable & what did they overlook that allowed the Japanese to capture such an important base? Rob Nolli Illigitimi Carborundum!!!Current Builds: HMS Victory, SV Thermopylae

They expected any attack to come from the sea but the Japanese attacked from the land side.

They only expected an attack from the sea as the jungle was considered impenetrable also all the guns they had also only faced seaward and couldn't be turned to fire inland. The water supply was also a major problem once the Japanese captured the resovours they just turned it off Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
