hi this might be a stupid question but in the official build why cut the heads off the rear three pins and not take them out Confused

You'll find that the magazine steps also say to leave the pin shanks in at the plank joints. Which is because these are week points which relate to bamboo planking as its not the most absorbant of wood types, where removing the pins can pull away the plank at the same time.
So its safer to snip off the head's and push in the shanks a little, so that when it comes to sanding the hull, the shanks do not interfere with the sanding as they are obviously much tougher than wood, where you may end up with high spots around the shank area.

How do you identify the sizes of the pin heads when you order it online?

My local hardware store's brass pin's head are much bigger than from the SOTS.
