Hi,

I have done some work on the launch, by adding a coloured band around the top part, using the same colour as the inside, Humbrol RC417

I started by cutting two 9mm strips of masking tape.

The strips were then put onto the launch running one edge along the top edge of the boat. Then using two more strips, these were stuck to the hull, with the edge butting up along the 9mm strip already stuck in place.

the 9mm strips were then removed to leave the hull that i wished to paint.

I have painted these and will post the results on the forum tomorrow.

Hi Claret, nice work on the launch.... Really sorry to hear you intend starting your build again.. Does this mean you are ordering back issues up to issue 14???? that would make it a costly restart... Have you not considered trying to dismantle the hull and restarting it that way...

Balsa infills I found a great help but I also ensured I followed MWG's tutorial closesly especially in regards to measurements and not putting any stress on the ribs... Would I do it again.... the answer to that is yes but only because I have a good result with my first attempt....

Hope you get back on track again very soon and as always I will look forward to seeing you progress..... Nice thing is it is really nice to see you aren't giving up...... am sure you will get there in the end....

Best regards and a very merry xmas to you too....BigGrin BigGrin

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the message.

Yes, I have purchased the back issues, but only the ones with the relevant parts, Works out to 11 back issues.

I do not think the balsa infill were the main problem, the first dismantle was caused by poor jig assembly.

Taking it apart the first time, I damaged the false keel at fib 13 ( something about the number 13LOL ).

There is a lot of merit in adding the balsa, which I will probably do one I have the decks in.

Regards

Claret.

Hi,

Finished painting the more of the launch, the 9mm band along the top.

once the paint was dry, i removed the masking tape. The results are below.

I have also painted the oars Brown and ivory, once dry, I tied them together.

the bucket has painted brown and the bands black. I superglued a cocktail stick into the middle of the bucket to help paint it.

I decided not to use the handle provided, but used a thin piece of copper wire that was thinner. Superglued to a cocktail stick made painting it easier. Once dry, I superglued the handle to the bucket. The results I was happy with.

Thats it for now.

Claret.

Hi,

Replacement parts arrived last week, and have been busy getting upto the point where I stopped my last build.

Just about there, everything assembling as it should with no adjustments to the decks etc. and have definitely sorted out my mistakes from before.

Will post pics soon.

Hi all,

Finally up to the point where I decided to start again.

The main problem was with the jig being set up incorrectly. However, i did notice that everything fit together much tighter. Did I over hand the mating edges on the false keel and the bow formers?

SOTS II pictures below:

The decking fitted into place with no adjustments at all!!

I probably will not use balsa infils. They did not cause my first attempt to go wrong, but just a cost decision after buying another set of parts.

That's all for now.

Claret.

Hi,

Progressed a little further into new assembly territory, by adding the stern deck extension, supports and frames.

Burnt ash was gently sanded where the edges would be glued. clamped until the glue dried. Results as below;

Hi,

did a bit more to the launch, tool the strip of wood from issue 13.

I cut this strip to the sizes and shapes as per the instructions in the magazine.

But rather than gluing in each piece individually, I laid them together. making sure the ends were level, I held them in place and placed cellotape over the width, trimming any tape near the edges. This gave me one assembly which after sanding the ends, i glued into the launch using super glue.

Once the glue was dried i painted matt white.

That's all for now.

Claret.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the message.

Going to start faring and planking the hull today. Did some planking on the stern, and was good fun.

Great build and diary you are keeping.

Hi all,

Been busy fairing and planking this weekend.

Did the stern first, no major problems doing this!

I sanded the edges to the profile to rib former 27.

Fairing was done next, taking time to sand to shape using the bamboo planks to ensure 100% contact with the ribs and plank.

The plank bending was okay, once I had turned the blade around to the blunt edge to prevent cutting through the plank (voice of experience!!). LOL

I pre-drilled the planks to ensure I did not split the plank when pushing the nail in.

The results are below.

Happy with the results.

that's all for now.
