You are the HMS Asphodel. On Convoy SL 150

You where a Flower-class corvette and was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean west north west of Cape Finisterre, Spain (45°24′N 18°09′W) by U-575 ( Kriegsmarine) with the loss of 92 of her 97 crew. Survivors were rescued by HMS Clover.

U-575 was herself sunk on the 13th of March 1944, in the north Atlantic north of the Azores, by depth charges from the Canadian frigate HMCS Prince Rupert, US destroyer USS Hobson, US destroyer escort USS Haverfield, and by depth charges from British Wellington and Fortress aircraft (Sqdn. 172/B and 206 and 220/J) and Avenger aircraft of the US escort carrier USS Bogue. Leaving 18 dead and 37 survivors.

I have a personal connection to that ship in that my grandfathers older brother was an LS on her and was lost at the age of only 21,

over to you now,

Thankyou! Interestingly my other Grandfather (not the one on shermans) was a Petty Officer on the HMS Ramillies, which did convoy escort amongst other things, Prince Phillip was on the ship at the same time. He did survive the war, and continued on ships/trawlers/light ships till into the 1980's.

Ill have a question shortly BigGrin

Ok chaps, try this for size.

My name may have been Mr. Micheal, unusually, i was born twice and died twice..i may have been homeless, possibly even illiterate.

However i was buried with full military honours, with the rank of Major.

Why?

BigGrin Hi Todayshorse
going by your clues "lived and died twice" i am thinking about
a film i saw years ago (The Man Who Never Was)and a recent program on telly about finding a suitable dead body, making up a false life and attaching plans for an allied landing invasion on Greece to divert the enemy troops away from the intended landings on Sicily.
(Operation Mincemeat)
The body was to be dumped at sea by submarine and would hopefully be found by the Germans off the coast of Spain

Major William Martin RM was the name given to the corpse
Glyndwr Michael was the original name who was apparently a tramp who "died under the conditions required" for this deception

Was this the homeless person found dead in Scotland during the 2WW
who was then dressed up as a major of the British army and cast adrift by submarine off the coast of Spain with an attaché case full of false plans about the Alied invasion of Greece. These plans were inspected by the Spanish after the body was washed ashore after a tragic accident and copyed then sent on to the Germans as intended. He died twice under 2 names
regards
Andy
Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

After seeing the film many many years ago, I read the book. It was very interesting. I cannot remember much of it, but the steps we used to deceive the enemy, made me wonder about what we still do not know.
completed..... Endeavour Longboat, San Francisco 2, Virginia 1819

BigGrin What are the names of the ship and the piece of armament?

Confused Built in the UK but not for the Royal Navy

Confused Most historians believe she was left to rot in a French port

Confused One historian is trying to establish a link to her involvement in the sinking of the Mary Rose (Cool give you a rough time line)

The main gun had a calibre of 22 inches and thus made her the warship with the largest calibre gun in history
(Cool even bigger than the Yamato)
The gun can still be seen on a volcano in "Athens" but not in GreeceBored

My understanding is the increasingly accepted yet academically disproved theory is that the Mary Rose was 'holed' by one of four french frigates that had both ore and sale thus could move against the wind. these were on loan from the Pope and had probably been built in Britain. Don't know about a particular ship but they had a large gun mounted in the bow that was targeted by steering the ship.

Blink the ship in question was hired by the French and was
later bought by Lious X11 and renamed hence the possible link
to the sinking of the Mary Rose

The ship i think is the 'Michael' or 'Great Michael'.

Michael was sold to Louis XII of France on 2 April 1514 for the bargain price of 40,000 livres and was known as "La Grande Nef d'Ecosse" says wikipedia.

As for the 22 inch gun :-

"Michael's other curious claim to fame is that she is said to have carried among her armament Mons Meg, the great cannon used earlier in the siege of Threave Castle, which had a calibre of 22 inches and thus made her the warship with the largest calibre gun in history, even when the 20th century 40 cm/45 Type 94 naval guns of the World War II-era Japanese battleship Yamato and her sister ship, the Musashi, are considered."

And then :-

"Most historians have accepted the account of the Scottish historian George Buchanan that after this the French allowed her to rot at Brest. However, one historian, Norman MacDougall, has recently suggested that it is worth investigating the possibility that, under her new French name, she took part in the French attack on England in 1545 that led to the sinking of the English warship Mary Rose in the Battle of the Solent on 19 July 1545."

Ok then guys, check this :-

Who are we, and whats odd about us?

Firstly -

I was given the rank of lance corporal and have been promoted each time the King's Guard has returned to see me. In 1982 i was made corporal, and promoted to sergeant in 1987. I died shortly after my promotion to sergeant, and my place of honour was taken by my two-year-old near-double. I was promoted in 1993 to the rank of regimental sergeant major. On August 18, 2005, I was promoted to Colonel-in-Chief, and on 15 August 2008 I was awarded a knighthood.

Secondly -

I was a lance corporal in the 1st Battalion, the Royal Welsh. I served as a lance corporal from 2001 until 2009, except for a three-month period in 2006 when i was demoted to fusilier, after inappropriate behaviour during the Queen's Official Birthday celebrations while deployed on active duty with the battalion on Cyprus. I retired in May 2009.
