hi in part 18 the fifth plank is to be tapered at the bow can enyone tell me how much of a taper (width) and from how far down the plank the taper is. the assembly guide just says as shown in photo.

hi benny,the norm is at the bow end taper down to half width,back to former 7,that's what I'm doing.the instructions are a bit vague.the only one I havn't tapered is the first one. im quite confused about how you're meant to taper them too, but what i did was taper it up to 4mm to frame 5, even then its not completely flat with the bow. Processing - Progressing

hi admiral,having done other models of this shape of bow (victory and others)I have learn't to my cost that the bow planks WILL go the clinker way,i.e. bottom plank will try to overlap the plank above.to counter this you will have to taper the bow planks,when you choose to do this is up to you,why don't you have a look at son of bulwarks diary of the victory,he explains this problem and how the clinker comes about. Karl, don't know if you have noticed but Son of Bulwork is no longer part of this forum, he has deleted his victory diary.... I think it is a sad loss to see him leave the forum..... Regards Alan

sorry chaps didn't realise that sob's diary had gone,although not much help but I will put up pics tomorrow of my planking,again I fear it will not help those that are using bamboo,I'm using all my old bits of 2x5mm.wood stock,as someone on here who will remain nameless(mwg)bought up all of cornwalls stock of 2x5mm basswood of which I ordered before xmas and has not showed up yet.if the newbees would like to wait a bit they will see how the planking goes on my build.I regard this part the most important part of the build,so no need to rush. Karl Happy new year to you. Way behind on this one as my subscription ( less than number 10) I lost due to them charging me full price for the first issues. Set up a new sub but now get the deliveries much later than most ( lesson to be learnt - keep gob shut about being charged an extra couple of quid). Been following the builds and interested on this bamboo change to the usual lime wood for first planking. I raised a query about MDF being used in the false keel and ribs of my victory models lady nelson and was assured no issues. Guess all companies have to offset raw materials/profit/what the end user will pay. Mr T did respond to another member That lime wood would be ok so as soon as I get sizes of the bamboo I am planning to order the same size in lime wood (basswood ?) to do this build. Sorry tgat SOB has gone as you guys have been my lifeline over the months - hope nothing bad has been the reason for his resignation from this site. Not a big poster of texts myself ( sausage fingers and small keys on an iPod touch not a good combination) but really do appreciate all the advice, pictures of the exceptional builds and the community spirit. Not s big one for new years messages because in my view one awful day is very much like another - but I will say I how you get through 2013 with the least amount of issues that whatever god you support will allow. Happy 2013 everybody, As is my wont, I am being very indecisive over wether to use the supplied Bamboo or use Limewood. Having almost decided to go with the Bamboo, I have now realised that cutting all those cannon Ports out of the hard Bamboo may become something of a nightmare, at least with the sanding you can enlist a little electro-mechanical assistance. Certainly, cutting out the chain pump holes from the Bamboo hold planking on my X-section was quite hard work. In it's defence the Bamboo does finish nicely, but for the 1st planking this is not an issue.

Clearly the model can be built as supplied as Mr T will demonstrate, but there may be ways to make things a little easier, if the answer was black or white I would've made my mind up a long time ago. The most obvious point is that changing materials will add additional cost to your build. At the end of the day it's a personal choice, based on experience, cost and time.
