Nice work as usual Mike.... For me, as this is my first build I do not intend to deviate too far from the official build... think I need to build up experience before I tackle modifications of this kind..... thoroughly enjoy your tutorials though.... thanks.... Regards Alan

THE MODIFICATION OF THE HULL STERN Hi Team the first thing I did was take measurements from my other models and came up with a size which I thought was acceptable. The balance of the keel had to be my priority, I prepared 2 pieces of Balsa wood (6mm thick)in a triangle shape 6cm x 4cm x 1cm,and fitted them 3mm back from the stern cross section planking. I agree, that looks better already. I've been troubled by that lower stern profile, plus the sweep that the planks would have to take, for some time. Your modification looks like it could well be the answer. Looking forward to more

I will put these questions to the Team:- 1) Where does it tell you in the instructions to thin the keel on both sides of the bottem stern edge. My calculations estimate the Keel should be no thicker than 1mm to accomodate the plank thickness either side of the Keel of 2mm we also have to fit the second planking on top, an interesting challenge? 2) If we fit the Bow sprit (not the Stem) in the centre, it would hit the foremast, I believe it should be fitted to one side, therefore missing the foremast. On ships of this era the foremast was fitted very much closer to the bow,and the Bow sprit offset, than ships that came later. On my Model of the SAN FRANCISCO 2 the Bow sprit is offset. I would suggest a `Starboard` (right) offset, what do you all think? Hi Mike, your knowledge and experience is certainly coming to the fore and giving lots of food for thought to us lesser mortals. .... Interesting facts about the offsetting of the bow spirit and yet in all the diaries I have read on this forum it is the first time i have seen it being mentioned... Just goes to show the wealth of information one can obtain in this forum..... Thanks for sharing... Regards Alan

Hi Alan, its mentioned in issue 11 that 16th-17th century ships usually had the bowsprit set to the right as Mike has stated, i believe it should probably be set to the right as the magazine suggests, though im not sure how this would effect the rest of the build at the bow, good luck with your choices!
