Hi all, Just thought I would see if I can get a bit of advanced info on the colour of the visible decks. I am going to have a practice go on the second deck at some planking with black card and nails of fishing line (which I think was shown in Gandales build, sorry if incorrect),so I cut a small sample of the planking I will use and had a go. The nailing is fiddly, but should get easier as this is my first build. It was at this point I thought about staining the deck and gave it a quick brush coat of dark oak stain. The result of the nailing on the unstained side looked really good and clear but,the side I stained you could hardly see the nailing. So if the stain to be used is anything past light oak I think the nailing option will be a waste of effort/time. Any up front info would be gratefully recieved. Hi Derek, im not sure about the top decks, but it could of been fairly dark wood as seen in the swedish/dutch replica ships. though thats just guess work, theres also images where it looks like its just normal oak . http://www.lemback.com/w...ship-goteborg-inside.jpgProcessing - Progressing

Hi Derek, I don't think it's necessary to use anything for the Tree-nails they were made of wood, so they didn't stand out particularly. All I do is drill very small holes 0.5mm or less, I'll probably use 0.3mm on SOTS. Have a look at my X-Section build diary, where I've just planked the Orlop using this technique, the stain is light oak. I used pencil for the caulking.

Hi Court, That looks pretty darn good, I assume that the stain fills the holes in which case they will show a little bit more with the depth of stain in the hole. Regards Derek Exactly so But you need to use a dye type of stain, not a coloured varnish. I stain with the dye and then use a clear varnish.

That`s ok I used wilko`s quick drying wood stain (not varnish),but think dark oak was to dark. Will try a few test cases of differing tones.
