Hi All  Just thought I`d throw this one into the mix, re: the cleaning of parts before blackening etc. Have seen all sorts of cleaning agents recommended including ultrasonic cleaners which say use water only  ,they then go on to sell cleaning agents to add to the water  . Now some of these ultrasonic cleaners are selling for as little as £30 and I`m wondering if they do the job well enough without the chemicals, this would then be a lot cheaper in the long run over buying chemical cleaners for ever and a day. Ultrasonic Cleaners are the best way to clean things, I have one and have used them all my working life. You don't need the expensive cleaning agents they will work with anything even fairy liquid or even plain water for some things such as dislodging dirt when I go metal detecting. It's the tiny bubbles that do the work not so much the liquid. For degreasing I use IPA inside a smaller container within the main bath full of tap water. Great for cleaning the other half's jewelry too.

i agree those things are pretty good, i used to use it on my metal lord of the rings figures to get the paint off Processing - Progressing

Oh Boy, Bought an ultrasonic cleaner today at a cost of £30, from Maplin Electronics. Cleaned Gold rings (before I told the significant other) and the results were great. I also use mine for cleaning razor blades, they're never as sharp as new but it removes all the junk & extends their usage. When they're between £8-£10 for four it's well worth the effort. Wilfy
