 Has anyone here come across or even built this what looks like a wonderful Sea Harrier? Whilst purchasing further items for my Tamiya Sherman from the local model shop i came across this huge box, cringed slightly at the price tag (£79.99) but nearly bought the thing. Thinking rationally, i decided to do a bit more research before potentially upsetting Mrs Todayshorse with a surprise purchase! Mr 'obviously model crazy' in the shop assured me it was quite a kit, and at 60cm long when built I've no doubt it has the potential to be just that.... Further digging reveals it is indeed a superb kit but has its downsides. Needs a lot of work to look really, really good. First you have to chop the nose off and fit the FRS nose, as i believe its a GR3 really in the box. But theres a wealth of info on the 'net in doing it right I've discovered and im sure with time and patience i could have a go... Ive built 2 (yes, 2) Tamiya 1/48 Sea Harriers and was pleasantly surprised at how good i made them look  although they got destroyed years ago when our old home was burgled and the nice gentleman that couldn't get my TV out the window smashed all my models instead, including 3 1/12 Tamiya F1 cars. Im a little dubious purely from the fact it is Airfix, but im soooo tempted! Any info from you guys? Interesting site on building the thing... How to model the Harrier

Thats a great site with the aircraft in the field! I used to go to a guys house near louth and he had several Lightnings and various other things in his field....interesting!
The Britmodeller site never works on my Mac. Google chrome always says it contains malware or is dangerous and wont open it for me!

That looks like a nice kit and though I know what you mean about Airfix kits they have improved massively as time has gone by. It may have a few inaccuracies as you've already discovered, but as long as you are aware of them and know how to correct them then I don't see a problem?? You would probably do well to join that IPMS Harrier SIG as well where you would get a lot of help from guys who've already built the kit?? Also, on the point of inaccuracies in a kit, that is half the fun of model making I feel and if all kits were completely accurate, there would be no need for aftermarket suppliers and all those lovely goodies that they provide, but the kits would be hugely expensive because of all the extra research needed!! It is a lot of money, I know, but not for a large 1:24 scale kit that could be made into something awesome with a bit of effort. Manufacturers like Hasegawa and Tamiya are charging close to that sort of money now for kits of half the size!!
The guy in Toms' link is called Piero de Santis and I have long been a fan of his, he is a fantastic modeller particularly when it comes to building jets!! I posted some links to his stuff on here back in November last year. Check out post #4 in my thread on the link below, where the second one down in the list is a well worn Sea Harrier FRS.1 which I'm sure will give you some inspiration and probably sway you into buying that Airfix kit. Just don't tell SWMBO that I made you do it!!

Thanx for the info Kev, I've come across that guy before with the Harriers, he indeed is very good at what he does. Im itching to buy it but i think ill get on with my Sherman as its the first kit I've done for some years and see how i get on, its proving rather expensive as it is buying things/paint etc that i used to have but now dont!!
The McLaren has kind of re-sparked an interest from years ago but stopped due to mainly, life in general!

No worries TH, glad to help. Sounds sensible to try the Sherman first and see how it goes?? If you really have your heart set on one, then keep an eye out or 'save a search' on ebay for the Airfix FRS.1 and you never know, you may save quite a bit if you wait long enough?? I agree that it costs a bit to set yourself up for modelling, but once you've got yourself kitted out then it does get a bit more reasonable in costs per hour of enjoyment when you buy a decent kit and can often work out cheaper than going down the pub once or twice a week!!

It really is an impressive model when finished,with lots of working features too.
