Hope someone can advise on the following as I am getting myself confused. In the Victory build we reduced the thickness of the false keel to take into account that when the planking was applied the overall thickness of keel and planks would match the stern post thickness. In the SotS build we are only reducing the strength blocks that were added. I know that at least one builder has reduced the thickness of the keel but the magazine and official build do not. Can anyone please advise if this should be done or not? Kind regards Tony Happy Modelling

I reduced my keel thickness to 2mm then thinned the first planking as well.If you don't then the planking will make the stern post area far too thick. It is left full thickness on the stock build but looks wrong because the planking is proud of the stern post, they should be the same thickness. At the end of the day its your decision, Regards, Nigel

Tony Hi Tony, I reduced the thickness down to 1mm to take into consideration the 2x 2mm planks and the 2x 1/2mm second planking. I felt this action worked for me in what I am hoping to acheive with my build,in having the rudder the same thickness as the keel, but at the end of the day each member must decide for themselves if they intend to go against the instructions or not. I can not advise you on that. Go with what you feel is right and comfortable for you. Nigel/Mike Many thanks for taking the time to reply. Will follow your lead and reduce this part of the false keel. Thanks again Tony Happy Modelling

Just a word of caution, take care in departing from the official build as it can sometimes have unforeseen consequences, particularly in a part work as we can't see too far ahead. As a beginner I would advise following Mr T's official build. Who isn't thinning his Keel. I am not thinning mine either because as far as I can see, there is going to be a Stern stem piece inserted into the overhanging rear planks and then the planks will be tapered down onto this. But I might be wrong. But as Mike and Nigel say the choice is yours.

Andy I think that is some sound advice and on reflection will follow the official build. I take my hat off (so to speak) to the excellent skills of some of the experienced builders but would agree that I could end up digging myself into a hole I cannot recover from. Many thanks to all that have replied to this query and for input on both possible options. I really would like to finish this model as my victory stopped at that rib 15 issue which totally scuppered me. Many thanks again for everyone's time it's much appreciated Kind regards Tony Happy Modelling
