Finally got round to blackening the mesh for launch using Blacken-it and a degreasing cleanser.... being very careful with the vapours as it is strong stuff. When dried, cut out templates on black card, trimmed and test fitted. Once happy, cut the mesh using the card template and using CA glued the mesh in place.... Happy how it turned out... Tomorrow, issue 23 and the resumption of planking the hull....  Regards Gandale attached the following image(s):

Hi all, found tonight as I started planking as outlined in issue 23 that I am having to force the planks into position around the curvature of the bow, this is starting to give me a clinker effect....  It would appear inadvertantly, I have been forcing planks into position ever so slightly with each row laid rather than let the planks go where they want to go and adjust accordingly. As I progress further it is becoming more and more apparant.... big learning issue for me here. Now having a good think and I have decided as the planking is the first layer and will not be visable, I am going to lay the strakes where they want to go, cut and shape accordingly..... Certainly don't want to end up in a position where planks may pop later down the line.... Will post pics soon of the results or my attempted correction.... Who said building these models was easy eh!!!!!  Regards Alan

Don't worry too much about the first planking. The planks are 2mm thick for a reason. That is, they can take a lot of sanding to adjust to any irregularities, as you say it will be all hidden under the 2nd layer.

Hi Alan As C'O has said this is the under planking so don't worry too much about its appearance as its the next layer that needs to be spot on. There were a few references to an online planking tutorial in the vic builds but im still looking for the link that may give you some help. Il post it when I find it, if I recall correctly it was off the 'Model Ship World' site and explains a lot including the use off 'keepers' to prevent the clinkering effect's. Am not worried about the asthetics fo the first layer of planks, am taking it more as a learning session and just goes to show even by following the instructions displayed in the mag things can still go a little wrong. To recognising the problem and then resolving it is all part of the process.... Lesson learnt, let the planks lie the way they want to and not force simply to follow written instructions... every build is different.... Thanks again m8, appreciate it... Regards Alan

Have seen the tutorial you are referring to and found it really interesting. The planking isn't that far out but did find if I carried on planking the way of the mag then it wouldn't sit right... Pretty sure now the path I am taking will work out a lot better..... Thanks again m8....

Today I continud with the planking described in issue 23 but as previously mentioned I did have to deviate from the written instructions and Mr T's build. On the bow, completed laying two rows, the first row as shown in the mag but the second row has been laid exactly where the plank wants to go, tapered and fitted accordingly. If I had continued to the centre of the bow, forcing it into place then a clinkering affact would have been the result.... Also fitted one row either side of the top of the hull... Tapered the last two rows for the stern as instructed. A little fiddly but got there in the end... Have one more strake to add on the other side.... that's a task for tomorrow I think... Gandale attached the following image(s):
