The further I get on with the planking the better an understanding I am getting in relation to how the planks should be laid, tapered and trimmed.... I know lots of builders are not too keen on planking but have to say I am loving it.... As for a Graf Zeppelin, intersting thought but think I have enough with the SOTS, Vic on collection and a wish list that will never be completed within the years that I have left, but am going to have a darned good go at it.... ... Looks good Alan. I think you have the secret of a successful completed build here, slow but steady progress. An Owner of a model shop told me many years ago that one of the wooden boat kit companies had done Market Research and found that 80% of their kits never get completed, as people start with great enthusiasm but fall victim to the 'Tadpole effect'. Not us though, eh

looking really great alan! looks like you're getting closer to finishing the hull, i must admit too at first i never liked the idea of planking much, just wanted to get on with the details but i am enjoying laying and tapering the plank into place. I'm not known as a quitter so as long as I can breathe and have all my functions intact then this build and others will continue.... Get palpitations though thinking about all that rigging.... Almost finished issue 23, shaped some offcuts and finished filling the gaps on one side of the stern - have made a start on the 2nd side and only have 3 more offcuts to fit and then move onto issue 24 when it's released on Wed. Yes, I am using the bamboo planking as supplied and I am finding it excellent for precise shaping using a David's plane and a very course sanding block with a fine sanding to finish..... Also find it doesn't snap easily either.... Regards Alan

WTG Alan Looking really good. I have yet to start first planking layer,because, I am behind with issues and hoping all the base planking will be with me in a week,that`s when I have 11 days off work to have a mega building session. . I am in the meantime doing some practice planking on the false second deck (following your tutorial  ). I have also bought some miniature figures for painting practice and some barrels (wooden effect oo scale/1:74). Keep up the good work with hope of the best results. Not sure whether you will get enough base planking to complete the hull during you 11 days off but you will be able to progress a great deal with it... Not saying bamboo is easy to work with in all respects, just saying I am finding, in relation to planking anyway that to taper and shape the planks the Davids plane plus grade P80 sand paper on a cork block works very very well for me, finishing with a very fine sand.... plus I have only had one plank break on me. Cutting the bamboo especially the gun ports I think will be a different matter but will deal with that when the time comes..... Hope you find my method useful.... Regards Alan

Not a lot to do tonight except to finish filling in between the planks on the other side of the stern.... Now have to wait until issue 24 comes out on Wed so the build will be on hold till then... will be keeping up with all the other diaries in the meantime..... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Continuing beautifully there Alan, I especially love that really elegant curve to the stern under the galleries - well done! Looking at the stern post area where the rudder will be going, if I were you I would pencil mark the line of the plywood over the planking from the keel to that lovely curvy part before you add more planking to the hull, (I forgot to do it in time on the Victory and had to use masking tape instead of a straight edge to trim the overlapping planks back!)
