Due to a botched first attempt at planking the HMS victory I now need a supply of planks. I was wondering if any fellow forum members would have any planks or back issues they could sell me or if they could tell me where I could get planks at a reasonable cost?

Yes its the lime strips 2 x 5mm. As a matter of interest does anyone have a rough idea of how many planks are needed for the victory. The site you quote sell the lime strips in 1000mm lengths. Most of the issues that came with planks had quantities of 20 planks and that's roughly 6.5 metres. I can get about three planks out of each 1000mm strip. I'm thinking 60 metres might do.

Hi Crustybaps Not to sure on the amount you need as I haven't built the model in question but looking on the other build diarys it looks like around 45 strips per side [from the keel to the highest planking] but I would check with Mr T as he will be able to give a better estimate of what would be needed. Hope this is of help regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Hi Crusty, I would get 40 lengths to give you a good start its worth having some extra as I have found the are great for making little jigs and T squares etc. Also note that CMB charge an exrea £2.50 pp for posting any timber quantity, so more is better! I also found that I had quite a bit of waste from the 300mm lengths supplied so dont be tempted to cut them all to that size, cut as you go to keep your wastage down, you will be suprised how far it will go! Hope this helps Happy Building, Russ On the workbench: My Victory Build Diary - Victory Cross Section Build Diary - Black Pearl Build DiaryUnder the Bench: Millenium Falcon, Black Pearl x 2, Coral Victory Cross Section, De Lorean

I managed so far to get about 200 planks so far from forum members- thanks everyone who replied. I also ordered two back issues of 38 which has 40 planks in each issue. I thought that was a good buy because with p&p it works out comparable to what CMB would charge. But now when I think about what you have just mentioned with the wastage I agree there is so much waste with the shorter lenghts and I wish now I had ordered them instead. I am half way through the planking and I might have extra planks. Planking itself is a major project I never thought it would take so long. I hope that this is the most difficult and time consuming part of the job as I will never get finished at the rate I am going now.

Very Impressive Russ. I also like the idea you used for the cannon ports. I think I would like to inocorporate something similar in my model. Its not going so well at the minute :-( as im getting bogged down with the planking. I've got to the bit at the end where I have to measure the width of each individual plank before fitting. It looks like a dogs dinner but I suppose no one will ever see the bottom except me and plenty of paint and filler will hide dents. One thing though I dont think I can hide is the shape of the bow- less said about it the better.

It's OK! Crustybaps, i'm having problems as well. It's not the main planking or bow with me, but the stern. I've been about 2months trying to bend the first four rows of planks around the middle stern and broken quite a few. Although i've been quite economical with my planks so i've got a lot more to try. Keep soaking, bending, splitting, cutting and re trying. lucky i'm on the last two, then on to the port linnings. Mal.

If so you may want to try a different method such as an electric plank bender. I used a soldering iron and it made tight bends a lot easier. also try steaming the planks rather than soaking. It took me a long time to figure that out but once I started using steam the planks were so much easier to bend but I found out after most of the stern has been planked. I used a soldering iron inserted into an aluminium screw top bottle. Once I discovered this method I wanted to start all over again and rebuild a new kit, but I have decided to stick with it and see it through knowing that my next one will be that much better.

I think that's all it is, to be patient. Used Electric plank bender on its own, or electric plank bender and then steam. Bent into slight curve and then on the second soak re-bend tighter.Got two more planks soaking. I'll have to start meditation. Patients is the key Grasshopper. . Mal.
