court orchard wrote:I would think that that is easily enough, my back of an envelope calculations come to about 30m. But better safe than sorry. As you say it'll always come in useful for the next build. Thanks Andy, question is though.... do I trust your back of an envelope calculations..... think I'll play it safe and order more than enough... .... The bonus would be in giving me a selection of walnut strips to choose from to ensure I get the best colour match..... I also suppose I could class this as my first enhancement.... Regards Alan

A little more progress tonight. Decided to get to work on fitting the brace pieces at the base of the transom.... Started by using 4 off cuts of bamboo roughly the same length... Kept the length deliberately long, this way it gave me something to grip when it came to shaping.... Glued two strips together using PVA and clamped the whole lot together and left to set.. Gandale attached the following image(s):

Took one of the strips and roughly marked the length required. Shaped the strip using a small sanding block with medium grade sandpaper to get the rough shape, then gave it a fine sand.... Once complete then cut to length and filed to ensure a good fit... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Marked and predrilled .5mm holes for the pins. Set the pins in place and finally glued and pinned in place. Will now leave to set prior to final shaping with a fine sanding block... That's tomorrows task together with fitting the other side..... Happy building fellow builders.... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Kind regards Mike Mike, thanks for your very positive comments, it is very much appreciated. As for the balsa infills, they have been a great help with the planking and I know I will do the same when I come to start on the Vic. I gained a wealth of knowledge and experience using infills and I know next time I will take a lot more care and do it slightly different. Would I build without it.... probably not.... Thanks for your tutorial on the subject.... brill.... Regards Alan

Looking good Alan. A credit to you. I am a couple of issues behind, but will not be able to work on her until the weekend. Interesting comments about not using the basswood strips supplied but use more walnut. Undecided yet Regards Claret Also working on: SOTS. Moebius 1/32 Flying Sub with PE & lights.
Waiting in the wings: Polarlights Spindrift from Land of the Giants.
finished: 007 Iconic DB5.

Undecided yet Regards Claret Thanks for your very ncie comments Claret and as usual thanks for tking the time to look in.... My intention is simply to replace the basswood strips with Walnut strips, leaving the top half done in Sapele... think I will keep the red band with black painted wales, not sure yet, just thinking out loud..... Started on issue 25 tonight by working on fitting the two small wedge pieces to one side of the stern.. This took a fair amount of time not only using steam to get the correct profile but after shaping I found it still wouldn't sit right , not until i chamfered the joining edge of the planks... Perserverance got me there in the end and have to say I am pleased with the final results, well worth taking my time over..... Should sand nicely... Gandale attached the following image(s):

More of issue 25 planking done today.. Got the two small wedge pieces fitted to the other side of the stern, again fiddly but worth the time spent. Also managed to fit two complete rows of planks to either side of the hull. Found I got a much better fit between the planks when I chamfered the joining edge of the new plank.... Happy with the results so far. Tomorrow hopefully will get the last row fitted on either side just leaving the work on the lauch for the rest of this week.... Happy building all and thanks for looking in.... Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
