I have seen several ideas on ballasting the hull, so that the ship is not too top-heavy when finished.
How about fitting 3" bolts through the keel, between each of the larger ribs, packed out with lots of large "penny" washers?
This should leave room for full-depth balsa infills against the ribs, and then complete the infills with vertical slabs on the outside, horizontal slabs at the base.
I had thought of filling the spaces with spray-foam, then surfacing filler.
Forgive me if this is a mad idea. I have a month to wait for issues 4-7 and am just having to think, as there is nothing else to do!

i would have thought you dont need ballast unless you intend sailing it

Just that some people thought it might be a bit top-heavy and vulnerable to toppling over, when it's finished and on display.

i think if you are thinking of putting on the water you will need a keel like a yacht with a weight plus heavely water proofing the hull

Cap`n David, When you receive part 6 you will see several methods of mounting the vessel on a plinth. Now having said that I don`t know if there will be an official stand,but there is nothing stopping you fitting one of the plinth methods and then not using it if a better option turns up. I have gone for the encapsulated wing nut method and when I turn some threaded metal rod into them they are very stable,so should give a good base fixing. Thanks Derek.
I will leave a decision about mounting until later, but there have been other threads about adding ballast, to make it less tippable when mounted for display.
Just thinking, as I have nothing much else to do until the next delivery in a month's time.

I don't think this is a mad idea.Instead of using balsa I used birch ply to pack my hull out under the waterline.It now weighs about twelve pounds but all of the weight is at the bottom.The hull stands up the right way and wont topple over you have to turn it on its side.I am sure this can only be an advantage when complete and sat in a stand.

Hmm
I seem to have started something here,
But I do like the idea of nuts bolts and washers at least this can be adjustable to suit each individual
coming back to you all on this topic . Ive glued four pieces of wood inside the hull between rib frames 6 to 13 and 16 to 21 each side ,total weight of ballast .75 of a kl. and to my mind it feels just right
