Prepping the Hull

Build time 2 hours

One way or another there is quite a bit of work to be done on the hull. I have started by drilling out the scuttles, I used a 1.5 drill for this, some care is needed as the stern flexed a little while the top row was being drilled out, but generally the hull is thick plastic so no great issues. there are three scuttles that fowl inner mouldings when drilled out so some care is needed not to over damage these. Once done i de-burred the inside with a wire wheel.

Next job was the exhausts for the smoke generators. I drilled two holes using a 1.3 drill, on reflection a bit large and would recommend a .7 drill. I have positioned mine 21mm from the top of the hull with a center point 2mm either side of the centre seam line (see link)

http://www.bismarck-clas...or/smoke_generator.html

Moving to the bow the centre anchor hole needs repositioning. I have placed a 3mm diameter hole 7mm from the very top of the bow (see link for reference). once this was done I glued some scrap plastic behind the original hole to brace it. I have filled this and the blemishes under the hull with Squadron filler, i find this a good product for minor surface blemishes.

Any questions or suggestions greatly appreciated

J

Thanks Mike,

I have been asked for my view of the armour belt thickness on the hull. The answer is yes they do look a little on the thin side, in fact there is a number of issues with the hull. For most people however i guess the hull is more than good enough. There are some things I plane to change others i don't. below is a list of corrections that could be made some minor some fundamental I will be correcting those in red the others I will be leaving. A good solution to most issues is actually to clad the whole hull in plastic card to reshape - i wont be doing that.

Some countersink
distorsion of some scuttles
hydrophone holes to shallow
center bow anchor hole incorrect position
stern lip incorrect shape
Port and starboard anchor slipways to shallow

Bow too thick
stern hull wrong shape
hull bottom wrong shape
propella shaft locations not correct
armour belt
no panal lines
no weld seams
no rivet heads

no smoke exhaust

Hi Andy,

I think they are called hand irons? Confused I doubt they are in the eduard set but as you say hard to tell. But i will be getting them in the MK1 upgrades set (now being promised fro end of next week). I think they would be very easy to scratch build. simply drill holes into the hull at each end of the iron and thread some wire through.

I have also ordered some parts from Germany to replace the propeller protectors and replace some of the moulded on doors, There are also some doors missing.

Hull Prep continued
Total Build Time 3.5 hours

I have drilled the hydrophone holes a bit deeper so i dont lose them when sanding and to make sure they will be okay to take primer paint and was without vanishing. I used a .5 drill for this.

The bow section needs some clamping to get the parts to fit. I clamped the front end first and once set cemented the part to the hull and clamped the back end to pinch the parts into place.

Great start Jase.

Hope you don't mind but I'm going to hold off starting mine for a little while & follow your diary, think you could help me immensely with this one.

I want to build her to the best of my abilities but my knowledge is lacking about ships in general.

Fantastic work.

Have you seen this diary/debate? http://www.shipmodels.in...c.php?f=59&t=144178

Mmmm.... that's a bit odd. Beware of WHS, I had this with them a few years ago with a book that was out of print and it transpired that they don't update their database and the book wasn't available after all. I hope they do have a dusty pile at the back of their warehouse. But all my usual sources, such as Waterstones, The Book Depository and Amazon are saying Out of Stock and Out of Print, well apart from those 2 ridiculous 2nd hand copies on Amazon at £500 and £1590. I might order one just in case thoughConfused Confused

On a more positive note, I can recommend the Kagero 3D book on the Bismark which has excellent detailed drawings, particularly of the Superstructure.

Looks a good book. I am probably not going to purchase any books at this stage, i have a few bismarck books that tend to be around the story rather then the design of the ship. I think there is enough primary resource on the net to get the job done.

That's probably right, I'm still a bit old school and can't get the same enjoyment from the Net as Ink and Paper. I tried a Kindle last year but it didn't hit the spot. I'm a Dinosaur on the Eve of ChicxulubLOLBored
