I have completed the hold and stained it in the same stain as suggested in Mr T's diary.
I now feel it's a little dark. I realise I cannot do anything about the hold, but was wondering, would it look completely stupid to do the hold and outer rib faces in dark oak, but use a lighter stain, like medium oak for the remaining decks?

Sounds like a plan  The hold would always look darker anyway, because of the lack of light down there.
