Been getting quite a bit done now, I have finished the lanyards, and threaded all the clump blocks, Be it right or be it wrong, I have put a spreader plate to the top of the ropes, this involved cutting a piece of 5mm x 2 mm wood, putting 10 saw drafts in to it, to take the ropes, and after the ropes were glued in I put a piece of 2mm x 2mm timber on the back to stop the ropes coming out of the spreader bar. This gave me equal spaceing's for the ratlines, I also put eyelets in to this bar to take the deadeyes from above on the foretop. I then tied the ropes from the deadeyes from above, on to the eyelets on the spacer bar. I then marked the positions of the ratlines on to a piece of card and taped on the the side of the ship. This gave me the right position to work to as I ascend the mast. Boy this is a long process, but got on good, The only thing I am really unhappy with is the seizing to the dead eyes at the bottom of the lanyards, the heights are all over the place, On the other side they are all good for the same height, will have to do something about this, don't know what yet.

Got a good bit more of the standing rigging done. I have now started the lanyards and shrouds to the rear mast now. Once I have threaded the shrouds, I pull the white thread through to the front, by positioning the thread between the deadeye and the lanyard thread, sometimes there is enough of a gap, other times I have to use a needle threader, I then pass it back to the side and tie it off at the back, out of sight. Again once all done, I can start the task of tying the ratlines, what a long job this one is. After that, I decided to do the upper sections to the main mast, But I had already glued the top and second top sections together, so putting the lanyards in to this middle section of mast was more difficult, I had to do this in situ. All in all, quite a lot of progress getting made, Mo Mo

It was was not for this forum, I would have been unable to turn something like this out, so a big thanks to all that have contributed, I have only built one ship before and it was a part completed Danmark by Billings. And this was done back in 1985. I eventually lost it somewhere along the line, but what I remember was quite poor. The Surprise is a big ship.

This is a very well executed build that you have here. Bravo. Your little jig is a good idea for tensioning shrouds to the same level. I have often used a slightly simpler version made from a paper clip cut and bent to a form like so L__________I. You can make as many of these as you need and then set the top and bottom dead eyes onto the hooked ends. This gives approx the same result as yours but it is simple to make a whole set at one time.

John Good tip as well John, always good to hear other people's idea's. I think it's quite good, when some of the shrouds are slightly different heights, on a real ship they are at different heights, ( That' s my excuse for mine ending up higgle d piggilty.

You are learning Mo, thats the exact same way as I have always done them. Practicaly foolproof as long as you dont overdo the tension. HMS Surprise HMS Snake HMS Bounty HMS Royal Caroline HMS Victory rebuild HMS Supply
