Hi Cap'n David I've got a Sandvik sanding block which is very similar and it's still going strong after more than ten years! They will last far longer than sandpaper but you will still need the good old fashioned stuff especially for complex curves on the hull after first and second planking and also for wrapping round the mast dowels too. The 'plate' types are great for flat sanding but they can't bend round things like sheets can. I find the most useful sanding implement for large areas is the foam block, comes in various grades and very cheap if you find a good shop (I get mine from "The Toolbox" shop in Plymouth but they're widely available.
