Feeling a little deflated this evening...Blushing Blushing . Went to work on finishing the decking and have ended up with what I think is a disaster that will need work tomorrow to try and rescue.... All to do with the staining, did some testing with various stains on some offcuts of decking planks and all looked good... I decided on the end to go with burmese teak, thought it looked the best... When applying to the deck I found it was far too dark with a few patches where the PVA has been, the deck was fully sanded before applying..Cursing Cursing .. It is so dark I truly hate it...Cursing Cursing One saving grace is that this deck is not going to be seen so damage is minimal... Don't think I will be using burmese teak on decking again thats for sure.... Now having a think and will tackle it tomorrow.... Using this deck as a practice area has certainly paid off, would have hated this to happen on any of the visible decks Blink Blink Happy building all....Cool Cool

Hi Alan,
Sorry to hear of your problem with the stainCrying , to light is one thing, but to dark could be a stinker. As you say though, better that deck than a main visible deck.
If you remember the modelling session I put together about deck planking, the main stain colour on that was a Ronseal stain called natural oak, that may give you something to gauge it by and they do a fair sized range of colours if you want to adjust lighter or darker.

Good luck

Thanks Derek, I tried a test piece with light oak too, simply a case of I preferred the test piece of the teak.... wasn't the case when I applied it though to the full deck.....Blushing Blushing .. Will see what I can do with it but will be a lot happier when it is covered up....Blushing Blushing

BigGrin Hi Alan
The thing with wood stains is they can be deceptive until tried on a large area, when testing I always use an area of 3 inches square minimum to get a better impression of its quality's. On another note have you tried Danish oil [natural finish] this darkens as you put more coats on and you can see the results before another coat is added. hope this helps

Hi Andy, thanks for looking in and thanks for the tips... Have to admit I only tried various colours of stain on single strakes, didn't try it on a larger surface.Blushing Blushing ... will do in the future though.. another learning point for me...Huh Huh . Will also give danish oil a try. At least this mishap doesn't spoil anything as it will all be covered in the end....BigGrin BigGrin .. Thanks again...
