Well Alan if you were to ever do just one war ship this would be the one even straight from the box its a tremendous kit.

Thanks Jase, built aircraft in my childhood years, gliders and R/C mainly with a few airfix kits thrown in for good measure. Took the hobby up again with the SOTS as I wanted something new to do in the evenings as I can't get out much due to caring responsibilites looking after my other half after a ruptured brain aneurysm... One day I may consider a project like this especially seeing the work you, Andy and other builders do with these type of builds.... Notice I never say never, just not at the moment... Keep the great work going....Cool Cool

BigGrin Hi Jase
We all build to our own preferances M8 but to me the discrepancy [ what ship it was] on the yellow gun tops makes it a no no 4 me apart from the fact she was on a secret mission to break out and yellow gun turrets to me would be like waving a red flag at a bullBlink like 'here I am catch me if you can'LOL . I personally don't have a problem with it if you want yellow go for it il do grey and see what the consensus isFlapper LOL Drool

Ha ha I honestly have not decided I would love to have a go at the Balkan stripes but think its a bit daunting. I know yellow turrets is controversial but if she had git to Brest she would have had to of had them. May be time for a survey of forum members Huh BigGrin

Yes the Balkan stripes and false bow waves certainly set her off as for the actual painting it would be a lot of masking but the results worth it, after doing the silloete of the merchant ship on the side of the Shinano at 1/700 this should be a breeze at this scaleLOL Drool Blink Drool LOL

I think it is the best paint job if your going to do it. Grey is grey is grey. I always go for the more challenging schemes on my military stuff, its different and more challenging and its not green, or grey!!LOL BigGrin LOL BigGrin

Hi Jase,
been watching this with interest, Im sure you will make a great job of the stripes version, im sure you have seen this build but its not in your links but if this can be achieved on a 1/350 then it will look awesome on the 1/200 - http://www.florymodels.co.uk/revell-1350-bismark/

Painting the lower Hull

Total build hours 16

While I, and the rest of the forum, cogitate over what paint scheme my Bismarck is going to take I have pressed on with painting the lower hull, no debating the colour there it is Schiffsbodenfarbe III Rot 5 I have used Oil based paint from WEM and hand painted as i am rubbish with a air brush and don't want to make a mess LOL

First job was to prime the hull i have used Halfords Primer white once dry i masked off a line 2mm into the bottom of the boot top (see post above for boot top line) I have done two thinned coats so far, i recon 3 will do the job. i have also done the rudders (one coat to go) and picked out the zinc anodes with Tamiya Titanium Silver.

As always any constructive comments gladly received.

I like that Red Jase, it looks a lot more realistic than the other builds I have seen. More Dull and Functional looking, as it should be, I might follow your lead on that one, is it available in Acrylic?

Painting the hull continued
Total Build Time 19.5hrs

Lower hull is now finished in terms of paint. So my next challenge was marking out the strips and false bow & stern. I used a number of sources of reference to get the position correct and had to build up some superstructure to get reference point. My stripes have worked out at 30mm each with the exception of the rear set which are only 20mm wide each. The false waves i have drawn free hand, I will make copes from tracing paper to make mating templates for the other side. the white stripes and false waves overlap the boot top; i have estimated the the boot top is reduced from 10mm to 3mm in these places. I have masked off ready to paint the black in tomorrow. just a point on masking. I have used 3m pressure sensitive tape. the advantage of this product is that it is clear allowing me to cut out shapes and sharp angles. it only works on flat surfaces as the tape is not very flexible, but perfect for this job.

Oh No Andy!!!!!!!!!!! please don't go down toe road of so many Bismarck builders and go for a fancifully bright red just to show of the brass screwsBlink Flapper It should be red brown. see link below one of many that will confirm this but this link explains more clearly paint arrangements. My understanding is that WEM Paints are all produced from chips for their specific colours, So I am fairly confident I am as close as can be. However if you want to charter a sub we could both go have a lookCool LOL LOL LOL Flapper Blink

BigGrin Hi Jase
I think you may have misread my post as I said I will be using the right hull colour and the bright red option was never contemplated , but iv included a couple of pic's of my Yamato with the Tamiya hull red as a comparison as it may be an option for those people who cant obtain the WEM colour . Im currently investigating the options on the mini sub adventureLOL Blink LOL
regards
AndyCool

PS there is also a coat of so called matt varnish on the hull but I think its more of a satin finish im still looking for a good matt varnish.

Painting the hull continued.
total build time 23 hours.

Boot top and stripes went on today. Although i can not work on the bow and stern until my upgrade set turns up Mad I have been able to work on the centre area of the hull. just one side done at the moment. I would be interested in peoples view as to the depth of the stripes on the boot top, does it look correct? After masking i realised I had left the boot top at 3mm on the stern after the false bow wave when i should have returned it to the 10mm depth Blink A also mananged to smudge my nice fresh paint when removing my masking Cursing
