arpurchase wrote: Hi Alan A definate improvement there on the deck, another way to go with staining is artists inks but these are more substitutes for main colours. Hope this helps regards Andy Thanks Andy, agree it's an improvement but it has also been an excellent learning experience... Regards Alan

delboy271155 wrote:Hi Alan, That must have been a lot of hard work, but I think time well spent even if on a deck that won`t be seen very much.A vast improvement if I might say so. A lesson learned for the good, for us all. Keep it going Regards delboy271155 (Derek) Thanks Derek, too a fair amount of time and effort and hopefully the use of Danish Oil will just finish it off nicely.... Learning.. that's why we all joined this forum, to learn and share experiences good or bad..... Regards Alan

Captain David wrote:I don't think it will be seen at all - unless you plan to cut the upper deck under the gratings and get a little light in there. Good practice though. Thanks David, just maybe it is a shame it won't be seen... but at the end of the day this deck always was done as a practice session.... Regards Alan

Well, this is the final installment on the deck rescue.... Coat of Danish Oil has now been applied and my over riding opinion is.... considering where we were after that first awful staining, I think it has turned out quite well indeed.... another technique learned and to be banked for future use..... Not going to do any more, the deck is as it is..... Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Just to let members know, I have decided to do a side build, The San Fransisco II, just waiting for the kit to arrive... Have noticed there is only a couple of build diaries for this model so my intention is to do a diary to add to the small library.... Hope people will look in....
Regards
Alan

I am sure your build diary will be just as popular as your SOTS diary. Looking forward to following your progress.

Thanks for the encouragement Bernd, Derek, Andy and Mike... . Decided rather than start another major build like the Vic I would cut my teeth into something smaller.... San Fran II just seamed to fit nicely... kind of looking to do smaller builds alongs side the big babies.... Kit should arrive tomorrow with a little bit of luck.... Mike, have also been reading through your build diary and like what I see, will be hoping I can produce something just as good..... Still think the rigging is where I will need the most help... Regards Alan

Due to other demands on my time I didn't get too much done this evening... . Did however make a start on fitting the gallery section... Started with the stern piece by lightly sanding off the black ash, did a test dry fit and all looked good.... Glued in place and clamped to ensure a good fix... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Removed the clamps when dry and was very happy with the fit, nothing out of alignment... So much so I found I have very little overhang at the sides so tomorrow it should only take a few minutes to sand everything level before fitting the side sections..... Happy building all.. Continued tonight working on fitting the gallery pieces... Started by giving the edges of the stern piece I fitted last night a sanding with an emery board, ensuring everything was flush and also ensuring I didn't alter the profile at all.... On dry fitting the side panels I wanted to ensure a good fit taking into consideration there is a length of plank to fit under the side panel piece. Using some offcuts of bamboo I pinned a plank in place as a temporary measure. Gandale attached the following image(s):

Glued and fitted the gallery side piece and clamped in position, then removed the temporary plank as I didn't want that sticking to the gallery. Left to dry before continuing.... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Once I was confident everything had set and was secure I removed the clamps... Happy to say everything was sitting flush.... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Nicely done there Alan! There's so many complicated compound curves on her stern it even makes the Victory look simple! Well done indeed! Robin First wooden ship: The Grimsby 12 Gun 'Frigate' by Constructo Second: Bounty DelPrado Part Works Third: HMS Victory DelPrado Part Works 1/100 scale Diorama of the Battle of the Brandywine from the American Revolutionary War Diorama of the Battle of New Falkland (unfinished sci-fi), Great War Centenary Diorama of the Messines Ridge Assault Index for the Victory diary is on page 1

With the gallery fitted I then moved onto to start fitting the dummy gun supports.... Started by measuring and marking as described in the magazine, cut slots to aid with the curvature involved. Decided I wanted a better fit than simply a little PVA on the ribs only. Bevelled the lower edge of the plank to give improved adhesion to the deck and dry fitted.... Supports fitted at an angle but flush with the ribs..... To hold in place I used some offcuts of bamboo, found this was flexible enough to apply the correct pressure on the ribs, no undue strain..... Tomorrow will continue to fit the dummy gun supports and hopefully get them painted.... Until then, happy building folks....

Alan
