moving on to issue 32, having completed the gunports (two rows) continued planking upwards, cut out 3rd. row of gunports, and now the planking starts in earnest. pic 1, shows the tools I use(d).first I marked the plank to where the taper is going to be, next I plane the timber to 1/2 width, then soak for 1 min. bend with the crimper using DIAGINAL cuts, this puts a slight twist in the wood to force it up and around, so you don't get the step in it. then I pinned and glued said piece, and now moving on to the middle section. Hi Karl...She's looking well mate...I got myself one of those pliar type plank benders a couple of weeks back for use with my sovereign build when I get around to continuing with it? Is it what you use on all your builds, and how do you rate them? First time I've had one! Always used a soldering iron or hair tongs in the past...Keep the pictures coming mate. Current Builds: Deagostini HMS Victory: Deagostini HMS Sovereign of the seas. Completed Builds: Del Prado: HMAS Bounty: Hachette: RMS Titanic: Del Prado: Cutty Sark...

I tried the soak and elastic band round a jar method(takes too long) but it works, had a bash at the electric plank bender, too much messing about, but is good on the smaller bends,so the crimper/pliers type? I first started bending dry, is ok but only on certain woods,I have found that you need to persevere and practise on soaked basswood for best results, because by careful manipulation you can induce twists which greatly helps to stop "clinkering" effect. so the answer to your question, yes I use the crimper plank bender ALL the time for the planking, but you do have to persevere and not use too much pressure and ensure the blade is turned to the BLUNT side, some come with the blade on the cutting side. good luck and enjoy. k. Thanks Karl for your prompt reply mate...Yeah, I know what yer mean about us all having our own opinions and preferences on the best way to go about bending planks and tried most of them with various degrees of satisfaction, but never a plier plank bender? That was the main reason I sought your eminent advice on the matter as you have a considerable amount of builds under your belt? Cheers again mate, all best.. Hi Karl
Looking good as always. I am also making use of the plank bender but are curious about the stern planks That almost 90degree bend. I like your explanation. Is there some tips on the stern planking? I am also at this stage and needs to start with the stern.
Regards
Gerrit

Do you know what Karl, i've just dashed downstairs after reading your post and found out i've got my De-Ag plank bender with the cutting side out. I was wondering why i was cutting the planks sometimes, after trying to be so delicate with them.I'd just left it in that position thinking it was the way to use it. I've just reversed the blade, and BING, the lights come on in my head. SIMPLES. Thanks Karl. Learning all the time at something so simple but overlooked. Mal.

Gerrit hi gerrit, my best advice on the stern planks is when doing the row, starting from the bow,the planks should be left as long as possible so that the stern plank is as short as possible, so that you do not waste too much wood trying to get round the very sharp bend. I soak the stern piece in HOT water for 5 min. then use the crimper to crimp very closely round that bend then soak again, the wood will start to splinter but not quite break, and if your really lucky wont splinter at all. also the stern plank should be tapered to half width at this point so not so much to bend anyway. will put up more pics of stern soon. good luck. k.
