Hi this is my first build and so far have been able to progress realy well based a lot on the tips and advice being posted on these forums, and by following the many build diaries. All my questions have always been answered but now I have another. I having been painting so far using Tamiya acrylics and am satisfied with the results. However I'm not sure about what to use or do about protecting the paintwork or even if this is necessary? Can anyone advise on what is recommended as I would hate to see the paintwork fade away because I hadnt properly protected it. Also Im worried about adding something now to the paintwork that might affect the good results I have had so far. Thanks in advance.

Acrylics are usually thin paints, but for something like wood there shouldn't be any problems because the wood is softer than something like plastic or metal although though enamels are more durable and thick. For protection you might want to have a look at some thing like matt varnish, but even though its Matt it may give a shiny look so have a look around first, but acrylics shouldn't fade away :) Processing - Progressing

You also need to consider where you are going to display your model, because over time, daylight/sunshine will most certainly fade the paintwork.

I to use tamiya acrylics and spray completed sections of painted and bare wood areas of the model with aerosol plasticote satin varnish(clear). This is readyily available at b&q.It does slightly yellow colours like white but this is the uv filter that protects from fading. Regards Nigel

I saw some Plasticote spray varnish last week at my local 99p store. Worth keeping an eye out as we are some way from doing any major paintwork.

I also got a set of acrylic paints for 99p. Ten 12ml tubes. The red and brown (vermilion & burnt sienna) mix up to make a good red ochre. I may need more of the black and the white, but at 99p I'm not bothered! Set of 12 artist's brushes for 99p - four sizes each of synthetic, hair & bristle. 99p stores are also good for small tools, clamps, superglue. They don't always stock everything so I pop in often to look at the stock.

Thanks for the tips! Lots to ponder but nothing a bit of experimenting won't resolve.
