The Case for yet more Photo Etch. This is a little bit of self justification. I have just acquired Eduard's Boat Etch set, which comes on 2 sheets albeit one of them small. I initially decided against this set as the MK1 etch looked OK and it didn't appear to add much more. However on closer inspection I discovered the following. Firstly the MK1 Oars (all 32) are poor, they are too long and the blades are twice as long as they should be. This is a bit of a pet hate as the Caldercraft Oars are equally bad. The Eduard Oars are correctly scaled and have a degree of 3D on the Blade which looks really nice. Secondly Eduard supply all the Hooks, Webbing etc. to lash the Boats down, in minute detail, this adds another 80 parts to the build. Thirdly, I don't think the planked top surface of the Boats shown on the MK1 etch is correct and also the planks for this and the Decks are too wide and short. This is corrected by Eduard. Finally parts such as the Rudders, Lifebelts, etc. have detail on the Eduard etch, as opposed to flat brass in the MK1. I will however be doing a mix and match as some of the MK1 etch is better.

Without doubt the Eduard set is nicer and your are right about the oars. I did not intent to get this as the MK1 set is ok but you may have just sold it on the basis of the holding straps arrrrrrrrr more money!!!!!! “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

The Main Searchlights with Eduard PE added another 11 pieces per Light. Warning! This is seriously small PE, do not attempt unless you are a little crazy Part Count 187.

Think I love far too many builds on this forum that I am spoilt for choice..... Watching this build come together with great interest.... Regards Alan

@Jase, it does and the Eduard etch is something else, not for the faint hearted, those lifting hitches have to be bent and have the fixing bolts on them. @Andy, there's a blast from the past 'Daktari', I had to a few pieces at a time and then go and do something normal. @Rob, definitely going to need both by the end of this build. @Alan, I can tell you that sneezing is not a good idea Never did find the pieces. @Derek, thanks.

Have just completed all the Cable Reels or Capstans III, IV and V as they are referred to in the kit. There are 10 2 part plastic ones in the kit and these are replaced with PE by both MK1 and Eduard sets. I felt the Eduard PE was a little less bulky, so I have used the Resin centres (which have nice wound cable detail) from MK1 and Eduard PE, except for the 4 Davit Reels supplied by MK1 which are not in the kit or the Eduard sets. In the Photo the Davit Reel is on the left. I have also shown one of the Eduard painted PE figures next to a Reel. Also 2 useful Tools for all this mountain of PE a Rolling Jig and a Cutting Out Tool both made by the Small Shop. Two of the parts for the Search lights need to be pre-curved to fit the Searchlight and the Cut out Jig avoids the PE parts entering that special dimension which means they can Warp Jump incredible distances in totally unexpected directions as they spring from the Fret. Part Count 243.

I've spent the last couple of hours preparing the 4 Anchors. Because I bought the Trumpeter Extras Pack, these have Cast Metal Flukes, but with the plastic Shanks and 'D' Shackles from the basic Kit. But bizarrely there is no Shank provided for the Stern Anchor, despite all the holes being there and on the plans it is shown without one, which would leave two odd holes. There is a spare Bow Anchor and it is possible to carefully thin the Shank down on all 4 sides and modify it to fit. I'm just posting this so that no one else will waste 45 minutes looking for it, like I did, it's not there. Part Count 254
