Hi jase,
I made a couple up yesterday and they looked better than I expected, quite cute really, the quadruple fold on the body and the double fold on the head works quite well and they are poseable to a degree. They where useful, if for nothing else, in helping me to decide on wether to use some MK1 or Eduard PE as they really give a sense of scale.

Deck Fittings - and a little bit of scratch Wub
Total build time 72hours

After a lot of consideration I have decided i will largely follow the kit build sequence, with one or two minor exceptions. So I have started looking at the deck fittings today. I have built the intakes and used the MK1 etch. there is nothing wrong with the Trumpeter etch at all but the MK1 grating is just that bit finer.

My next job needed a little bit of scratch building. On the bow there are two movable arms, not included in the kit and as yet not covered by the aftermarket boys - so I have made my own using some styrene sheet and modifying the eduard deck anchor points ( part 30 on the front area etch set). I will use the MK1 etch on the deck. my arms are 1mm x 1mm x 5mm with the ends rounded off. I glued the arms in first then added the etch after. I modified the parts just to shorten then so they would fit. The centre point where the two arms meet also needs space to accommodate the flag staff.

Deck Fittings
Total build time 80.25 hours

Some progress on the deck fittings today, mainly the intakes. I have also made up the MK1 depth charge cages. Kit part PE-A46 is flat so i spent some time forming the correct shape (see link). This hand wheel fits onto a shaft that is part of the deck moulding; this was broken of on mine so i replaced with a bit of brass rod. Looks better than the triangular shaped shaft anyway. I dry brushed the grills so as not to lose the detail of the mesh, pleased with the outcomeCool

Lower port forward superstructure.
Total build time 86.5 hours

Made a start on the lower superstructure today. first job was to paint in the dark grey strip at the bottom. rough paint then masked off 1.5mm and primed the whole part with Halfords white primer. Next was tp paint in the steel deck area and at the same time painted in the areas where intake grills would be. Once this was dry came the task of adding some additionl wire and 40 etched partsBlink most the parts are from the MK1 set but the winch life ring mounts and hose cage are all Eduard. All fairly straight forward the life ring mounts and hose cage being the only fiddle bits. I will paint before i add ladders and the overhanging steel deck.

Blimey, Jase you're cracking on with this. Good stuff though. Can I just ask, the Lifebelt Supports and Lifebelts don't look quite right, is there a mismatch in size between the Eduard Supports and the MK1 Belts?

Hi Andy,

Yes there is a diferance between the two etch sets. the Eduard ech expects you to remove the moulded on life ring in one pieceLaugh i think I am going to make a mould to make my own from green stuff. and use the etch life rings where not on a Eduard hanger. by the way be carful removing them from the fret the paint chipped on mine as i cut it off and half the ring paint fell off!!

Deck Fittings Continued.
Total build time 93.5hours

Nearly finished the deck fittings now. The Eduard instructions have you add an etched spoked wheel to the top of the capstan, but this does not look right so i removed the mounting of the plastic kit part so the etch sat slightly proud of the capstan top. The Eduard etch canvas cover frames for the stairwell openings are a really nice addition, I have not fixed these in position yet. There are two MG installations to add to the stern deck. this is a single kit part but the MK1 set significantly reworks it with 3 pieces of etch a brass barrel and turned brass mountDrool

Absolutely agree Jase, the Capstans look completely wrong, I like what you've done with them.ThumpUp
Coming along nicely, I'm still waiting for the PE complexity to resolve itself. I'm seriously tempted to abandon the German and go for the Pontos.
