I think I'm running out of space for the planking of the hull, it's all getting a bit tight, Blink now I know it's been said "don't worry about the planking as a second layer goes on" but as you can see from the photo's, down the bottom it's all a bit tight. From the top, I've come 12 planks down. And from the bottom, I'm 11 planks up.

Have I come in at the wrong angle (so to speak) at the bottom ? will I have to cut some planks of and restart ?

Am I worrying about nothing ? Blushing

Questions I've had in the past, I've never needed to ask as someone has beat me to it and the answer has been on line. Other rhan this problem, I'm thoughroughly enjoying the build and the forum.

Thanking you all in advance for your kind and genorous help.

Tony

I guess this is SOS?

Yes it dose not look quite right - although i am not building this but have done Victories Hull. if you have a second layer of planking then my suggestion would be to leave it be and correct with the remaining planking. However you need to understand what has gone wrong before you do second layer. My guess is you should have some steelers in their to help the planking.

If you PM MWG I am sure he can help you.

Tony, I am building this ship and will confirm the planking is all tight around the bow and the stern. Lots of planks simply taper to a point and reading the rules on planking this did surprise me, especially as no mention was made of the use of stealers or droppers... With that in mind I decided to follow the magazine build, tapering the planks to points and like you found I was running out of space at the bow.... Take a look at my build diary and you will see I carried on ensuring a laid the planks as they wanted to lie and not force any into position, it turned out quite well in the end.... As the hull will have a second layer, ensure you cover as neatly as possible then follow the build instructions from the mag and Mr T on how to get the best finish on the final layer.....

Hope this helps..

Regards

Thank you both Jase and Gandale, as you pointed out Jase, "look to see where your going wrong"

I think my problem lay in the tapering and steelers.

Gandale, thank you for pointing out your build diary which I spent some time looking at. Your photo's, taken from different angles, compared to the mag were most helpful, although not quite right, I feel confident that the build can be saved without a major strip down BigGrin (which is what it would have got) by adding a few steelers I'm prety confident I can get the bows looking similar to yours..BigGrin

My main fear / horror, was to do a half right job followed by a bodge up and then find myself fitting the second planking and following my initial mistakes Cursing

I think your best bet is to work from the bottom up carry on tappering but let the ends of the planks join the edge of the bottom plank of the above planking as you have no space left on the keel. You will end up with the ends of the planking forming a line of joins to the bottom of the above planking. This is quite hard to explain but if you look at le mirage build log on modelshipworld by sjors you will see what i mean. This log just came to mind but there a lots of modellers that plank like this.It is totally incorrect practice but it should help you finish your planking without having to strip any planks off.As Gandale pointed out the instructions don't follow the proper rules of planking anyway.
Hope this is of some help

Thanks Nigel, I think I understand what you are saying, I was unable to find Sjors "Le Mirage" on MSW, however, as long as the final instructions on the second planking are clear and by following other peoples build diaries, I hope to be in with half a chance. Cheers, Tony

Nigel, if you are not sure about how to tackle the second plank layer then would suggest you hold back and see how others do it in their diaries, as well as following the mag and Mr T's official build diary... If you do that then I don't think you will go far wrong....Cool Cool.. So pleased you found my diary helpful, if it helps others then that to me is a bonus.....Cool Cool .. Good luck with your build.....

Sorry you must have misunderstood me,I meant the instructions do not conform to shipbuilding practice i.e.tapering planks to less than half their width and stealers everywhere.I finished second planking friday.I have done may own way complete with drop planks and no stealers. It is a little awkward though because its a bluff bow but it isn't if you know what i mean.I do realise though that this technique is probably to much for beginners that why deag have done the instructions that way.

No misunderstanding Nigel so no apology necessary... Simply saying rather than rush ahead with the second layer take a look at other builds including the official build before undertaking the task.... Yes the rules of planking are not being adhered to on this build and maybe the use of droppers is not for beginners and I include myself in that group... I have yet to decide whether to follow DeAg's instruction or to have a go with trying to ahere to the rules of planking, but that is just me..... For other novices, I would certainly say following the mag and the official build, looking at other builds also before continuing.... Cool Cool
