I am puzzled by the relative positions of the oar slots and the thwart planks on the launch. The crew would surely have sat on the thwart planks when rowing? They would need oar slots about a foot aft of them (i.e. in front of them when sat facing the stern for rowing). To 1/84 scale, the slots should therefore be about 3 1/2mm aft of the seats. But they are all over the place (in relation to the seat planks)in the photos on the official build diary. I am getting ahead of myself as I do not have the magazine instructions yet for this stage of the build. I guess these put the slots in the same position though, as lots of build diaries show the same. I may have to leave cutting the slots until I have the thwart planks in place and then decide where to cut them.

This is the beauty of modelling these great ships, each build is unique and full of little changes pleasing to the modeller... Do what is right for you, build it as you please. Only word of caution I would give is deviating too much from the magazine instructions or the official build, this being the main cause of many a good builds demise. Moving the oar slots I think would be safe enough, me I simply left mine as the instructions dictated. Not much of a help, just giving my thoughts..... Following with interest. Regards Alan

Thanks Alan. Yes of course you are right. My problem is, when I see an issue like this - which to me is an error in the instructions - I will not be able to forget it. I will always see that part of my build and think, what if...and think of those poor crewmen trying to work with an oar slot behind their back!

Agree with you David and it is the precise detail that a lot of builders apply to their builds that has me totally amazed, each have done it their way and I believe, seeing your build so far, yours will turn out to be something for others to behold too..... Good luck and best wishes on your build... Regards Alan

Nice photos there Karl. And, all the oar slots are just aft of the benches!

Thanks again Alan. I worry sometimes if I am being a bit fussy.

No Cap'n D, you're absolutely right, it's got to look right to your eyes if no one else's. Well spotted, I've not built the Launch yet, but will be taking your observation on board, when I do.
