Hi Nigel, Tried Cornwall model boats didn't have oak that thin. I love working with oak and will be making a display cabinet for SOTS with it and Irish granite. Like wise I will be shortening the overhang when the bits arrive. Have a look at where the side gallery's end I believe they are also high in relation to the gun port. That's based on the mounting slots but will have to wait and see. I am expecting to remake the ginger beard as I am not planning in raising the proop deck. Sandy

NMBROOK wrote:Now this is getting REALLY interesting,do we agree that the tiller enters the rudder outside the hull? The one thing that throws me is the height of the gilded head on the rudder which would be higher than the tiller as shown in the portrait. Here is a list of my mods so far to give you something to mull over; 1/Rear two sections filled with epoxy and microballoons below the waterline. This enabled me to reprofile the rear of the hull to a proper round tuck. 2/Hull is planked in hard maple below the main wales. All planking above wales is boxwood.I have done the main wales in walnut.I agree with you Sandy and Mike, mahogany does look right on models the grain is far too large.I was tempted to use ebony for the black sections but upon research I deemed it far too much hassle to work with.I have obtained some more boxwood strips to plank the decks. As you may have gathered the only paint used will black and gold apart from the George crosses inside the gunport lids. All planking is 4mm wide 3/I have altered the shear of the wales as I deemed them wrong as represented, not correct shipbuilding practice to have have a main wale chopped through completely removing its strength.I know this is shown on the payne engraving but on a high res image of the portrait you can see the upper main wale just clip the bottom of the last gunports. There are more mods in the planning Regards Nigel Hi NMBROOK, You certainly seem to have made a lot of changes. Do you have your own build diary, i could not find one. maybee you could post some pics so we can get a better idea of what you are on about and a link to the pic you have based all these changes on. It would be better than cluttering up Mikes build “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

PLANKING I have only fitted 6 planks each side of the gardboard planks and including the Keel as you will see in my build Diary. now I am fitting the middle planks (Port and Starboard) after this I will put in frames for the gun ports before I plank the whole ship. Through the photos you will see from the soaking stage, fitting the wet plank to the hull to allow it to dry out, then the final fitting with aliphatic glue, at the same time you will see the fillets I have fitted behind the planks as required:- MWG attached the following image(s): MWG BUILD DIARIES: HMS VICTORY, SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, SAN FRANCISCO II, HMS HOOD, HMS ENDEAVOUR LONGBOAT, HMS VICTORY X-SECTION, 007 DB5, NISSAN GTR, CUTTY SARK, RB7, AKAGI, BARK HMS ENDEAVOUR, HUMMER H1, MITSUBISHI ZERO.
