More work on the launch. Fine filler on the hull, especially at the bow - where I hadn't got all the plank ends to sit neatly together. I decide to give it a bit of paint at this stage, to further fill any tiny gaps and imperfections. It also helps, I thought, to get paint in under where the thwart supports will go - difficult to do later and brush out neatly. Sanded the paint back lightly and picked out any lumps of glue in the angles, with a knife. Cleaned back where I will glue the thwart supports in. I wanted to make the thwart supports a bit chunkier than the official method of using .06mm hull planking. So, I cut them out of the fret for the launch frames, as this is just over twice the thickness. These are taken from the short ends of the fret, as the ply bends more easiy that way than using the long edges. Next will be more paint, then wait for the next delivery. This will be a slow build. I still can't see the launch finished in the official build, which is 6 months ahead of my deliveries. Captain David attached the following image(s):

I can't do any work on the "Big Girl" until my next delivery in 2 weeks time, when I get the lower deck etc and I can put the frame together at last.
So looking forward to that!!

So looking forward to that!! Hi David, thank you for the nice comment. I simply try to support all model ship builders wherever I can. I believe in the spirit of this forum and try to play my part helping others whenever I can... Some people will agree with it, others maybe not.. There are many members on this forum that elect not to do build diary's but use members diary's to assist in their builds and in their research... each to their own.. If it helps them to complete their builds then that's great...  You will also find the start of the build to be rather slow but as you progress into it a little further you will see it gets a little more intense and in some weeks you may feel you don't have the time to get everything done. Take your time, build at your own pace but most of all enjoy it..... Will be following your progress with interest so keep the posts and the pics coming.... Regards Alan

Thanks Alan. Well, there are only a few build diaries but there must be hundreds of builders! I read them all, though there are only about a dozen major ones. Also, I look at the Victory diaries for tips. I will probably be quiet for the next two weeks, waiting for the deck to arrive. There is a pile of finished rib sections, saying "build me". When I have them all put together, I will have the beginnings of a ship and not a pile of bits! Thank goodness spring has arrived. I can now waste time on the allotment to fill in the gaps between ship work

First two cannons done and another coat of paint inside the launch. The final painting will come when they are ready for display, as they will probably get knocked about a bit in the meanwhile! The cannon barrels are painted with Tamiya X33 Bronze. The red ochre, as before, my own mix of acrylics. Black bits sprayed with auto paint. Really, really fiddly assembly here! The trunnion caps squeezed out excess glue, even with the tiniest amount applied, so needed paring back with a knife. At least the cannons still swivel! The eyebolts were fitted using Karl's excellent idea of using needles as drills. Well, dressmaker's pins actually. One sharp one to pilot the hole, then one with the point cut off to ream it out. Reamed out only to half the depth, the hole is quite tight at the end and the eyebolts stay in without glue, or any need to cut them short. Wire for the blocks was turned round a middle-sized paperclip, using fairly chunky pliers. I have yet to invest in any proper modelling tools! Captain David attached the following image(s):

Thats lovely clean work Capt.Its the details like these that can make or break a model.If I may suggest have you thought about using the narrowest black trimline along the waterline of your launch.Just a suggestion but I think it will work great with the colours you have used.

Now there's a thought, Nigel.
I have yet to decide on the final colour for the bottom. I tried a little yellow mixed in with the white but it was too much. Took four coats of white to get rid of it!
When I have finished adding the other fittings to it and therefore not handling it any more, then it will get the final finish.
Does anyone know if a boot-top line was done in that era? It sounds like another test of steady hand and calm nerves!

If you want white with a yellow tinge spray a couple of coats of clear polyurathane the uv filter has a yellow tint to it.Or Dulux barley white,this has a mild yellow to it and was available in test pots,not sure wether it still is.
