This is nice clean methodical work Mike.I may have a trick for you, that you do not know about,if you do then sorry for trying to teach you to suck eggs.
Before you soak a planking strip simply hold it in your hands and gently bend it where your bend is going to be.You will find when you bend it one way the fibres start to break away when you bend it the other nothing happens and the strip seems to be able to bend further.Make a mark on what will be the outside of the strip so that the plank will be bent the easy way.If you do this before soaking or steaming you will find no grain lifting on the outside of the curve.Using this trick I was able to fit many planks around the bow with no soaking or steaming.I know some people may say this builds stresses into the hull, but over time the wood naturally adopts its new shape and the stresses diminish.
Kind regards Nigel

Hi Nigel, Thank youBigGrin when I am bending the base planking I bend lots of them around the ship wet, let them dry for 24 hours take them off and leave them in the consevatory window to cure for up to 14 days this way I am not stressed and nor are they, and I always choose a face side and face edge. All tips are helpfulBigGrin Cheers Mike

FRAMING THE GUN PORTS

I had decided early in the build not to plank and then cut the gun ports but to make a frame and plank up to the gun ports here is the start using 5mm x 2mm on the base of the deck, and the top and side frames 5mm x 5mm basswood. :- here are a couple of photos, thank you for looking in Kind regards Mike

PLANK BENDING

I decided to bend a plank to go round the bow and down the side.

I soaked the part of the plank which comes in contact with the bow, and then I chose the best side and fitted it wet to the ship to dry for 24/48 hours, I drilled holes to take the pins.

Kind regards

Mike

TRANSOM OPEN GUN PORTS MODIFICATION

To continue the modification, you will see from the photos I have lined the ports with 5mm x 1mm walnut sanded them flush, then painted the linings with my preffered colour -- Citadel Scab red.

You will see a dummy gun which I will use (this is the gun I sourced for the Victory Dummy 24 pounders ) I like the look of it and it fits well.

After the first painting I sanded the gun ports then painted a thin layer of Citadel paint once again, I hope the photos tel the story:-

Thanks for looking in thats all for this sessionBigGrin Kind regards Mike

Hi Mike,BigGrin
Ref: my rear gun port post #642, I now see how it all pans out. I looked at the angle you were cutting the ports and now see the gun barrel straightens up when fixed to the rib behind it.
Yet another good lesson from a master.Cool Cool Cool

Hi Admiral, thank you for your commentBigGrin I agree they have a nice texture, this cloue is a plum shade and is a good match for the colour between the rubbing strakes on the SOTS

THE TRANSOM

After cutting the Gun ports, lining and painting them, it was time to lay the second planking in this area.

I have decided to give the transom a decoration which is my interpretation of how I wish it to look. I feel this ship was so full of colour and glitter that within reason anything goes.

I am planking in walnut and I have trenailed every 18mm, first I marked out with pencil then drilled .5mm holes and used cocktail sticks to achieve the desired effect.

I will be adding a .5mm plank (which has been coloured with red ink )between the walnut planks.

More later

Kind regards Mike
