Kobus, just remember Jacklin are about 3-4 weeks behind CNA as they send out 4 issues at a time once a month normally round about 23-30th of the month.

Hey guys,

This is my very first model ever. Thought I would start big :).
Anyway, have been getting from CNA weekly and have completed up until Issue 4 which came out on Monday.
I am scared of the Jacklin route because I subscribe to one or 2 other books for my kids and the postage is a nightmare. Things are posted and then returned because of the incompetence at the post office, so I went to purchase a bunch of tools at a model shop here in Boksburg and am ready to roll waiting for issue 5.

Happy Building everyone!

Cheers

Good day all, I've received my issues 4 and 5 on Friday in the post from Jacklin. Finished both this weekend and now must wait fot the next issues by post. Wondering if the Jacklin route is the best route?

I bought my tools from Jix in Melyn, great help, and my airbrush, pliers and files from Builders Wharehouse.

Happy building everyone!

Hi All

I have posted a reply on the South African Victory forum. We should maybe ask admin to move the topic to SotS and combine it with this topic.

Admin: Is this possible?

Welcome to the forum Cuandv. I'm sure you find everything you need on the forum. Dont be afraid to ask there are many experienced members that can help with advice and tips.

Hi Kobus, the one thing I have learnt with this hobby is the patience aspect. Even with our post office. Never fear once the build starts in ernest you wont be waiting for issues, but stock piling them as happened with a few of us on Victory.

Hi Andre, nice to hear from you again.

Good Day All

New to this nad loving it. Have built before but the plastic models. Aircraft carrir and the HMS Victory.

Just started with SOTS. Upto issue 6 now. Just 2 questions I need answered please.

The rib frame no.7 I received in issue 3 fits on the keel just slightly off 90 deg. Will it be a prodlem or do I have to rebuy the issue. I did a dry fit just to see if everything lines up. I'm waiting until issue 12 as I see there will be a strip on the deck to line it all up.

2. Please also advise if these issues will change to a fortnight release or will it remain on a weekly basis. I may be considering going via Jacklin.

Regards

Hi CJ and welcome to the forum. You are in the right place for the right assistance.
The rib should be 90 degree however you will probably need a few more ribs to enable to judge correctly whether it is in line or not. The deck support will also indicate whether you need to adjust. You don't have to buy another issue, just be patient and as with the Victory, it is made of wood, so you can cut away or add as you need.
CNA stock every week, but Jacklin sends out 4 issues at the end of each month. It might sound as though you will be behind but trust me, by issue 20 plus you will be storing issues. Enjoy your building

Thanks Hans. I am sure I will be a regular reader and contributor to this forum as this is the first build for me. I am so hooked that I went to purchase the full kit for the HmS Victory in the meantime while I wait for issues for SOTS.

A question though, after issue 6, I sit with a keel and a bunch of ribs that are currently dry fitted (until I create a jig).
I see the second piece of the keel, in the middle, is slightly warped, thus making the whole base of the ship and the all the ribs attached to keel piece 2 and 3 skew.

Now bearing in mind that I have dry fitted the ribs so far, I can take them out. But what is anyone's opinion on straightening the keel. I want this straight before I glue any of the ribs in place.

I have read on the UK forum that some people have soaked the keel and then dried it under a heavy object? Any other ideas?
I was thinking that if I create a jig and put the ship in it, forcing it straight, and then glue the ribs in and plank it. It will maintain being straight..

Any thoughts?

Hi Cuandv. The planking will not pull it straight as the warp is a siseways pressure and will pull the planking with it. Personally I would wet and use tiles/glass and heavy weight on top to straighten, if that does not work, request a replacement. Some builders wait until they fit the decks. If it is only as slight warp this should work, however as I said I would go for my first option. a jog is critical to keeping the build as a whole in a straight line. A skew keel will affect your whole build.

Hi All

I agree with Hans about straightening the keel. Another method that could be used, is to use supports on either side once it has been straightened using Hans's method. This is open to discussion as I have not done it.

I have all the magazines for the HMS Victory but am busy building at issue 86, at this stage it is impossible to build and be up to date as the magazines are issued, unless a person is retired and has lots of time on hand then you could build with every issue.

At the moment I do not know what has been delivered by Jacklin but will see it on 17 May when I arrive home from Afghanistan.

Regards

Andre

Hi Guys.

I did the soak method on the keel and stuck it on a gladd table in the sun with covered bricks and clamped it down.
This I did for about 2 hours and it has certainly sorted alot of the warp out.
There is a slight warp left, but I think I can deal with this when the decks get attached.
I am also building the Victory (Constructo) at the same time whilst waiting for issues weekly.
I am really getting into to this and having to learn helluva quickly but so far I think so good!

Hi Andre, its almost time to say, welcome back.
I'm only on issue 99 at the moment and realised that that last 10 issues have gone by very slowly, as there is a lot of work to do and takes alot of time. Good luck.
The postal system is still slow so don't be too excited, enjoy.

Hi

I have decided to take up the challenge in building the SOTS model. I am looking forward to the challenge but I am frustrated with the waiting process, as I have ordered through Jacklin. I have joined a model ship building club in Cape Town who meet once a month, to get some advice. But I appreciate that the forum is in place as I am sure I will gain from the experience you all have.

Question: does it make sense to consider building the HMs Victory at the same time, considering the delay in getting the next issues? Is the ship worth building?

Hi,

Two more questions from the newbie BigGrin :
1. How do I include the current build and wishlist on my messages?
2. Where do I load my builders log of my ship as I go? Is there a specific area or do I load it in this forum section?

I finsihed my two cannons and would like to "show them off". Blushing
Looking forward to hearing your feedback.

Hi Chantel. Welcome to the forum, any information you need or help for that matter you will find here on the forum. In answer to your question in Pierre's thread, I am with Pierre, if you have the time and space go for another build, however I would suggest a smaller and easier model like San Francisco or the Endevour longboat something along those lines. This will help build up your skill level. HMS Victory and SOTS are a little more difficult and require time, patience and plenty of reading, the build diaries are a tremendeous help in this area. Not putting you off by any matter of means, Victory is my first, but I do wish sometimes that I built up a set of skill with smaller models. Good luck, hope to see your build soon.
