Quick hello. New to the forum and pretty much new to model building in general (unless Kinder eggs count?). Always wanted to build something like this one day though and I'm pretty good with my hands, or so the ladies tell me  , so why no jump in at the deep end? Up to issue 13 now and so far so good but I've hit a little snag. I'm planking the launch and I'm not happy with the finish. I'm going to cut some more of my own little balsa wood strips and start again because the problem I have is with bending the strips without breaking them up by the stern? Or is it the bow?  I mean the front bit lol. Any tips? I'm thinking maybe if I try to soften them by moistening them a little with water? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

Hi Oli and welcome aboard. Many things can be learnt on the forum. Best is to soak the plank a little, attach and leave overnight to dry. If you have a soldering iron handy you can use that, just be careful not to burn the wood or yourself, or alternatively a plank bender will also do the job. Hope this helps. Rgds, Hans

Hello & welcome Oli,another way of bending the launch planks without soaking etc is to grasp them fairly tightly between thumb & forefinger nails & pull the plank though several times until the desired bend is achieved,you can also put a twist into the bend by altering the direction of pull.Hope this helps. Thanks for the tips guys. Much appreciated :) I think I'll order a back issue to get some more planks and give it another whirl. I knew I was doing something wrong. All part of the learning process though :)
BTW anyone else had a little trouble with the subscriptions? I've been sent two No.18 issues and no No.14. Irritating? Just a little. Grrr...

Hi Oli,
Also as the planks are so thin, a normal plank bender will just break them, so stay from that for the launch, but they are fine for the main planking on the ship.

This time I used superglue to hold the beggars in place. That actually worked lol Not sure Admiral Nelson would have approved the final result though. Hello Oli Hello Sapuna I also had an issue with the launch as this is my first attempt at this kind of model. Was pretty good at the Kinder stuff though. The advice you get on here is second to non and everyone is very willing to help. My advice with the launch is dont make the mistake i did by over sanding the outside. i ended up having to re order issue 8 and start again. it also initiated me to the forum and got some good advice. Hi Oli
I bent the launch planking just by dipping the ends in a glass of cold water for 15 minutes, then take out and stroke gently between your fingernails to get a bit of a curve, then soak again and repeat if necessary. Then pin them around something like a wine cork and leave to dry.
I am only up to issue 9 and there was enough planking to finish the job with two strips spare. I think I will get some more planks with issue 10 and don't know why they are needed.
