Triumph of the Dambusters
http://www.express.co.uk...iumph-of-the-Dambusters
The 16th/17th May 2013 will see the 70th anniversary of the Dams Raid and a number of events are being lined up in commemoration, such as a Lancaster flyover at Derwent Reservoir, Derbyshire, where the squadron trained for the raid. Another fly-past at Scampton, to be televised on the BBC, and the unveiling of a new memorial at Woodhall Spa, Lincs, where the Squadron later moved.
The BBMF’s Lancaster has already been given a new nose art and identity to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of 617 Squadron. It is now to be called DV385, Thumper Mark III, to match the identity of one of the Lancasters posted to the squadron in November 1943, to replace those lost on both the Dams Raid and the disastrous September attack on the Dortmund Ems Canal.

Would love to be at Derwent Reservoir when the flypast takes place - how thought provoking and glorious would that sight be?!

History has been very unkind to the Dambuster raid siting the quick repair as a reason to say it had little effect. Contemporary historians however have revised that view pointing out that all the manpower and resources that went into repairing dams and getting the factories working were diverted from the construction of Rommel's Atlantic wall. Thus the Dambuster raid should be considered one of the most significant events contributing to a successful D-Day invasion. Kev Jobsworths have banned the war's bravest airmen - and the public - from an official fly-past honouring their courage!!
No official event allowed at Derwent Dam because of traffic it would create!

From the RAF website
BY KIND PERSMISSION OF SEVERN TRENT WATER the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and 617 Sqn are planning to carry out a flypast on Thursday 16th May over the iconic twin towers of the Derwent Reservoir, recreating history as we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Dambusters. The aircraft will pass overhead the reservoir between 1300 and 1315 (local time) – 3 passes by the RAF BBMF and 2 by the GR4’s of 617 Sqn.
GENERAL PUBLIC
There will be no events on the ground and there are no tickets being issued. The aircraft will continue to carry out a flypast at Chatsworth – at 1320 (local time) this is an excellent viewing area for the general public as there are facilities in place for parking and spectators wishing to photograph the aircraft. Standard car parking charges of £3.00 will apply - WWII veterans will be exempt from car parking charges, with kind permission from Chatsworth.
Before coming to Upper Derwent Valley, please be aware of the following:
· Parking is restricted and will be allocated on first come, first served basis..
· The road up from Fairholmes to Derwent Dam will be closed to ALL traffic on the day.
· The road from the A57 to Fairholmes may be closed if it becomes overly busy such that access to emergency vehicles etc is compromised.
· Police will enforce parking restrictions on neighbouring roads eg A57 and Bamford.
· Cancellation: the flypast is dependent on aircraft serviceability and weather conditions may be subject to cancellation.
· Congestion may significantly delay your departure from the area after the flypast.
These flypasts will form part of several events taking place across the country – culminating in a commemorative service at Lincoln Cathedral on Friday 17th May.

It is a little confusing the way it is worded I'll admit - typical media!! - but the paragraphs below, which are next to the pic of Wg.Cdr Guy Gibson in the article, seem to suggest that the actual flypast will take place with a run in to strafe the dam but that no-one will be allowed to be there to see it!!:
Quote:
Sadly, the veterans and relatives are unlikely to experience the eternally stirring sight and sound of our last operational Lancaster swooping down over the place where it all began.
On Thursday, it will come thundering down the Derwent Valley and strafe the Derwent Dam — just as Gibson and his men did so many times in those ‘bloody dangerous’ training runs.
The Memorial Flight’s Lancaster will be joined by two Spitfires and two Tornados from today’s 617 Squadron for three spectacular runs right over the target. Earlier on, the devoted locals who run the little dam museum will also be holding their annual memorial service.
But thanks to the health-and-safety brigade, few members of the public will be able to be there, too. Severn Trent Water, which owns the dam, and other public sector ‘stakeholders’ have decreed heavy traffic on country lanes would pose an unacceptable threat to the emergency services. So there can be no official event at the Derwent ...
Unquote.
The mental aptitude of some of these people who make the rules really is questionable IMHO!! Like I said, people should just turn up anyway and show the authoritarian jobsworths who really is boss!!

Just noticed your post Tom, about the official blurb on the event and I note that "Standard parking charges of £3.00 will apply" when viewing at Chatsworth!!
Says it all really doesn't it?? It's not about denying people the chance to go to the reservoir because of concerns about the blocking of roads!! NO!! It's about corralling people into a public car park so that they can apply a charge and make some more money!! Leeches!!
