I'm having a pig of a time working with the bamboo planks even if I drill them. The main problem is pin holes splitting at the plank ends. I'm thinking of using limewood strips from Cornwall Model Boats. Would I have to remove all of the bamboo planks already in place or can I carry on using the Lime Strips of the same size. I already have quite a lot of planks in place.

hi syd, I. like you decided to plank in limewood, I would just carry on in limewood, and leave the bambo where it is, and do the rest in lime. good luck. k. You could try using increasing sizes of drill bits, with a spare bit of the planking and nailing into some scrap ply, until you get to the bit size that will work. I got a set of bits today in Hobbycraft that goes up in 0.05mm steps, from 0.3 to 1.6mm, for about a tenner.

Hi Syd, Don`t despair, I`ve planked the whole of the lower hull in bamboo. Yes it is hard stuff to deal with and as a novice myself, had a couple of initial problems. What worked for me was drill size 0.5mm and the supplied pins. I found that the 0.5mm hole still gave enough grip to the pins and only one split plank in the whole bottom half. If you need 0.5 drill bits, you can get them on e-bay in a pack of 10 for £5.89 with free P+P. Search item number 200884965978 for the drill bits. Good luck and hope this helps. Hi Syd, keep at it you will get there in the end.... I planked the whole hull using bamboo with very little problems, the key here is drilling the correct size holes to take the pins and to stop the bamboo splitting... I used the pins supplied but drilled .6mm even went up to .7mm if I was drilling into any of the knots..... Try drilling various size holes in some scrap and inserting your pins, you will then find the best size to suit.... .. Good luck with it... Regards Alan

dont give in. as above ive done the whole hull in bamboo. i started with a 0.4 drill but snapped it and ended up using a 0.5 by default and has done 95% with it. make sure you dont go too close to the ends. step it back about 3mm then angle the drill so you are pushing the pin in at an angle. Also i used the wife's thimble. drilled all the holes in a plank then started them all off with the thimble before offering the plank up to the frames. Made a huge difference on my soft fingers. Stu Cheers Stu
