Hi Alan, the same place that I got the black boxwood from does coloured veneer. They do two different shades of red. This is 0.6mm thick, however you will have to cut into plank widths yourself.
Kind Regards Nigel

Hi Nigel, thanks for the tip.... am going to go and have a look but with all the advice given so far I think using inks at this stage will be no no..... I may end up just painting the black and red using acrylics.... BigGrin BigGrin Thanks again for helping me along...Cool Cool

BigGrin Hi Alan
Inks are a good way of staining wood but the wood will need to be stained before cutting and fixing in place, venear's are also another way to go but if the colour is not right then it will niggle every time you look at it. What you must also consider that the position of the model after finishing as displaying in direct sunlight will fade the inks and natural colored venear's very quickly. hope this helps
regards
AndyCool

Hi Andy, thanks for that and yes it helps me a lot in deciding the way to go.... BigGrin BigGrin .. Problem I am having is there are so many different modifications that can be made but I know I don't have the necessary skills yet to undertake them all... Being my first build I really am going to air on the side of caution mainly sticking to the official build with a few asthetic changes here and there...Cool Cool .. My next build may entice me to carry out more advanced modifications where appropriate....Cool Cool .. Appreciate the advice as always.... BigGrin

Alan

Happy to say the trenailing on one side of the upper hull is now complete and am very pleased with the overall results.... Cool Cool .. Once it has received its final sanding and coats of matt clear varnish then it will finally give the appearance I'm after, nice and subtle....BigGrin BigGrin .. Now to get started on the other side.... and to think the lower hull is still to come....Mellow Mellow

Love that treenailing, it really gives the model character. Patience has paid off.

A MASSIVE congratulations on your selection Alan. You will have to get used to it,you ARE living proof that a beginner can take on a project like SOS and with care, thought and patience, start to produce a lovely model.Thirty years ago when I built my first timber ship model,I didn't even know what a 'treenail' was.Its stories of modellers like yourself that help our hobby to live on to the next generation and not become a dying art.Just realised I sound really old,I'm only 42LOL LOL LOL LOL
