1942 The Royal Air Force launches the first 1,000 plane raid over Germany.

1913 The First Balkan War ends.

1912 U.S. Marines are sent to Nicaragua to protect American interests.

1859 The Piedmontese army crosses the Sesia River and defeats the Austrians at Palestro.

1656 The formation of the Grenadier Guards, the senior regiment of the British Army.

1962 Adolf Eichmann, former SS commander, is hanged in Israel.

1916 The only large scale German engagement of the great war takes place. The Battle of Jutland. The Royal Navy lost one battleship, one cruiser and five destroyers. The Germans lost one battleship, one cruiser and one destroyer. At the end of the day, 2,545 men had been killed

1902 The Boer War ends with the Treaty of Vereeniging. Ending the first British war of the 20th Century.

1900 Troops arrive in Peking from the U.S. to help put down the Boxer Rebellion.

1838 The last battle on English soil took place at the Battle of Bosenden Wood between armed soldiers and 40 agricultural peasants. They were led by flamboyant Cornish wine merchant (Sir William de Courtenay) and were protesting against the poverty of their lives.

1944 Allied "shuttle bombing" of Germany begins, with bombers departing from Italy and landing in the Soviet Union. It had taken a long time to get permission from the USSR but on agreement it allowed for deep range bombing missions.

1942 The American aircraft carriers Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown move into their battle positions for the Battle of Midway.

1818 The British army defeats the Maratha alliance in Bombay, India.

1942 Japanese carrier-based planes strafe Dutch Harbor in the Aleutian Islands as a diversion of the attack on Midway Island.

1940 The German Luftwaffe hits Paris with 1,100 bombs.

1928 Manchurian warlord Chian Tso-Lin dies as a result of a bomb blast set off by the Japanese.

1864 Some 7,000 Union troops are killed within 30 minutes during the Battle of Cold Harbor in Virginia.

1098 Christian Crusaders of the First Crusade seize Antioch, Turkey.

1985 The body of Nazi war criminal Dr. Josef Mengele is located and exhumed near Sao Paolo, Brazil.

1982 Israel invades southern Lebanon.

1944 The Battle of Normandy began. D-Day, code named Operation Overlord, commenced with the landing of 155,000 Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy in France to liberate Western Europe from German occupation. 400,000 Allied American, British, and Canadian troops land on the beaches of Normandy The allied soldiers eventually broke through the Atlantic Wall, partly due to the German high command believing the landings to be a faint with the full landing still to come further up the coast. It wasthe largest amphibious military operation in history.

1918 U.S. Marines enter combat at the Battle of Belleau Wood

1862 The city of Memphis surrenders to the Union navy after an intense naval engagement on the Mississippi River.

1813 The United States invasion of Canada is halted at Stony Creek, Ontario. A British force of 700 under John Vincent defeated an American force twice its size under William Winder and John Chandler.

1982 Up to fifty British servicemen were killed in an Argentine air attack on two supply ships in the Falklands. Sir Galahad and Sir Tristram were anchored at Bluff Cove when they were hit by missiles in a surprise raid by five Argentine Skyhawks.

1967 Israel airplanes attack the USS Liberty, a surveillance ship, in the Mediterranean, killing 34 Navy crewmen.

1965 President Johnson authorizes commanders in Vietnam to commit U.S. ground forces to combat.

1904 U.S. Marines land in Tangiers, Morocco, to protect U.S. citizen.

1866 Prussia annexes the region of Holstein.

1863 Residents of Vicksburg flee into caves as General Ulysses S. Grant's army begins shelling the town.

793 Vikings raided the abbey at Lindisfarne in Northumbria. The event is commonly accepted as the beginning of the Scandinavian invasion of England.

452 Attila the Hun invades Italy.

1951 After several unsuccessful attacks on French colonial troops, North Vietnam's General Vo Nguyen Giap orders Viet Minh to withdraw from the Red River Delta.

1945 Japanese Premier Kantaro Suzuki declares that Japan will fight to the last rather than accept unconditional surrender.

1942 The Japanese high command announces that "The Midway Occupation operations have been temporarily postponed."

1923 Bulgaria's government is overthrown by the military.

1863 At the Battle of Brandy Station in Virginia, Union and Confederate cavalries clash in the largest cavalry battle of the American Civil War.

1790 Civil war breaks out in Martinique.

1667 The Raid on the Medway, sometimes called the Battle of Chatham began. It lasted for five days and resulted in a decisive victory for the Dutch over the English in the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The Dutch bombarded and then captured the town of Sheerness and sailed up the River Medway to Chatham, where they burned ten naval vessels and towed away the HMS Unity and the HMS Royal Charles, the pride of the English fleet. It was the worst defeat in the Royal Navy's history.

1623 British Forces made a treaty with the 'Potomac River tribes' proposing a toast to perpetual friendship. The Indian chief and 200 men then dropped dead from poisoned wine.

1970 A 15-man group of special forces troops begin training for Operation Kingpin, a POW rescue mission in North Vietnam.

1944 The U.S. VII and V corps, advancing from Normandy's beaches, link up and begin moving inland.

1943 The Allies begin bombing Germany around the clock. U.S. Airforce by day and Royal Air Force by night.

1942 Germany razes the town of Lidice, Czechoslovakia and kills more than 1,300 citizens in retribution of the murder of Reinhard Heydrich.

1940 The Norwegian army capitulates to the Germans.

1940 Italy officially declared war on Britain and France.

1916 Mecca, under control of the Turks, falls to the Arabs during the Great Arab Revolt.

1898 U.S. Marines land in Cuba.

1801 Tripoli declares war on the U.S. for refusing to pay tribute.

1719 The Battle of Glen Shiel, in the West Highlands of Scotland took place 'On This Day' between British government troops and an alliance of Jacobites and Spaniards, resulting in a victory for the government forces. It was the last close engagement of British and foreign troops on mainland Great Britain.

1429 Joan of Arc led the French army in their capture of the city of Jargeau (France) against the English commander, William de la Pole, the 1st Duke of Suffolk. The English suffered heavy losses.

1667 The Dutch fleet, under Admiral de Ruyter burned Sheerness, sailed up the River Medway, raided Chatham dockyard, and then escaped with the royal barge, the Royal Charles.

1942 American bombers strike the oil refineries of Ploesti, Rumania.

1937 Eight of Stalin's generals are sentenced to death during purges in the Soviet Union. This would have a huge impact on the USSR's ability to defend itself a few years later when Germany invade the country.

1918 The first airplane bombing raid by an American unit occurs in France.

1812 Napoleon Bonaparte and his army begin their ill fated invasion of Russia

1944 The first German V1 flying bomb, buzz bomb or 'doodlebug' landed in Britain - killing three people in a house in the coastal city of Southampton. Only four of the eleven bombs hit their targets.

1943 German spies land on Long Island, New York

1942 British forces lost 230 tanks in desert fighting.

1940 Paris is evacuated as the Germans advance on the city.

1917 The deadliest German air raid on London during World War I was carried out by Gotha G bombers and resulted in 162 deaths, including 46 children, with a further 432 people injured.

1863 Confederate forces on their way to Gettysburg clash with Union troops at the Second Battle of Winchester, Virginia

1777 The Marquis de Lafayette arrives in the American colonies to help in their rebellion against Britain.

1982 Argentina surrenders to the United Kingdom ending the Falkland Islands War. Argentine forces surrendered at Port Stanley. 255 Britons and 652 Argentines died in the conflict.

1945 Burma is liberated by the British.

1944 Boeing B-29 bombers conduct their first raid against mainland Japan.

1944 After several failed attempts, the British Army abandoned Operation Perch, its plan to capture the German-occupied town of Caen. Caen was a major Allied objective in the early stages of the invasion of northwest Europe but a combination of fierce German resistance and failures at the British command level foiled the operation before its objectives were achieved.

1940 German forces occupy Paris.

1789 Captain William Bligh of the HMS Bounty arrives in Timor in a small boat. He had been forced to leave his ship when his crew mutinied.

1645 Oliver Cromwell's army routs the king's army at Naseby. The Battle of Naseby in Northamptonshire was the key battle of the first English Civil War. 12,000 Royalist forces of King Charles I were beaten by 15,000 Parliamentarian soldiers commanded by Sir Thomas Fairfax and Oliver Cromwell.

1846 Great Britain and the United States agree on a joint occupation of Oregon Territory.

1389 Ottoman Turks crush Serbia in the Battle of Kosovo.

1779 Spain declared war on Britain, and the Great Siege of Gibraltar began. In February 1783 the siege was lifted and the French and Spanish troops retired, disheartened and defeated, after three years and seven months' conflict. The final peace treaty left Gibraltar with the British, but the victorious British garrison sustained a loss of 1,231 men, and expended 8,000 barrels of gunpowder.

1815 Napoleon defeats the Prussians at the Battle of Ligny.

455 Rome is sacked by the Vandal army.
