Hi Alan, she is looking great I agree with Nigel I would keep with the varnish at this stage, also the paint will not stick to the oilBigGrin All the best Mike

Looking mighty fine AlanBigGrin BigGrin BigGrin great job!Only thing with oil,may cause problems later in the build when trying to glue things to the hull,at least you can scrape varnish off where bonding.
Kind Regards Nigel

Thanks Nigel, appreciated as always....BigGrin BigGrin .. Now decided to go with Ronseal clear matt varnish, thinking 2 coats with a light rub down in between..... Cool Cool .. Thanks again...

Thanks for the continued support Mike, going to go with clear matt varnish as I want most of the hull to be in natural wood providing my lower planking is good enough.... Cool Cool

Planking the Lower Hull

.Before starting the lower planking there were some key decisions I made.. I said at the start of the build I didn't like the look of the white hull so decided I would plank the lower hull using walnut strips.. The Sapele is .5mm thick and my walnut is .6mm so gives me a little extra for sanding down. BigGrin BigGrin

Also decided, especially after the experiences of using Bamboo for the first layer that the final layer was not going to have strakes tapering off to a point... that meant the use of droppers and stealers...Cool Cool .. As I have never tried using droppers etc, I really don't know how it will turn out or whether I am doing things correctly so if the more experienced modellers out there see I am going off track then would appreciate they put me on the right track... Cool Cool .. Other immediate concern is determining when half droppers are needed instead of full ones... guess I will find out soon enough..Cool Cool

Finally, I think the lower planking is going to be very slow process to start with until I get a feel for what I'm doing.... Going to do a couple of rows at a time on each side to help ensure I get a balanced look of the two sides... May also do some treenailing as I go along....Cool Cool .. Caulking is also being done between the planks using permanent marker after lightly sanding the edges to prevent bleed.Cool

Well enough of the waffle, here is the pics of my first two rows (almost) and my effort at introducing my very first dropper plank....BigGrin BigGrin .. Comments welcome....

Regards

Alan

Hi Alan!
A very nice start of th lower hull planking! I´m sure it´s a good decision, I don´t like a white painting too. I want to use the original (basswood?) strips with a clear coating to get a contrast to the upper hull.

Happy planking, BerndBigGrin

btw: I´ll follow you, yesterday treenailing started BigGrin

lovely work alan! i was thinking of using walnut for the lower wales but i wasn't sure if it'd be dark enough compared to the sapele, so its good to see it be used with the sapeleBigGrin BigGrin

Hi Alan,BigGrin
The start of the lower planking looks good. Like the use of droppers, makes it look better than planks just getting thinner and thinner.

WTG Cool

Thanks Admiral, I didn't want anything too contrasting which is reason I hated the white hull... When this is sanded and varnished I believe I will have achieved the look I'm after....BigGrin BigGrin .. Everything crossed though....LOL LOL
