Upgrading the funnel

Total build time 114 hours

I am a bit limited in what i can do at the moment as I am still waiting for etch doors from Germany. So I have decided to work on the funnel for the time being. It needs quite a bit of work to add a fair amount of missing detail not least the lift which is quite a prominent feature not covered by any of the etch boys and so far i have not seen another build of this kit that has added it - but i will be.

So this is process so far...

First job was to remove the moulded louvre and replace with the MK1 etch. The etch was added after i had cermented the two parts of the funnel together, cleaned up the seams and removed the moulded on grab rails

The rear platform and ventilator were added next, this had to be fitted while in the dec as the platform sits on a gradient so i need to ensure it was correctly positioned. Next i added a piece of .020" styrene rod to each side of the ventilator to add missing pipework (this was only fixed to the hight of the ventilator.

I then added some boxes. the smaller has cable running from it the larger more pipework. the 2mm wide strip is the inside track of the lift, again only fixed at the bottom 5mm. this will keep my options open when fitting the two platforms.

With the other two pieces of pipework in place I can start adding the cabling made from the fine copper wire i stripped from electric cable.

Upgrading the funnel

Total build time 120 hours

Continuing to add detail to the funnel and build it up. I am not going to capture every single cable but I do want the funnel to look much more busy like the real thing.

Finished off the cabling on one side, I still have to do the other side but that is a mirror of the one i have done. I also trimmed down the rod pipework ready for ready to receive the crane platform. I have also added some rode over the louvre, the kit provides the mounts so a little surprised the etch boys have not finished it off?! it should have a small wheel on the bottom which i will add if i can fid two the right size in my spares. The outer frame of the lift has been added. Again strangely the Eduard etch provides the top mount for this but bizarrely turn it into a bracket??? what a missed opportunity!!.

I then moved to the front of the funnel. I needed this in place for reference and fore some more pipework. I used the MK1 replacement steel deck on the lower platform which all went together very well. I was going to use the MK1 etch for the upper platform but managed to snap it Mad

the folds on the MK1 set are much flimsier than the Eduard. so i have used Eduard for the upper platform. the ladder was an interesting problem. the MK1 ladder is to short stops on the upper deck. the Eduard ladder is to long going all the war to the funnel top, so I had to cut down the Eduard Ladder which gave me the opportunity to bend the top. the railings are also Eduard they were finer than the MK1 railings which are to short anyway! I then added the two kit parts the horn and some funnel thing? which i drilled out. and a couple of scratch built lockers and some pipework. A couple of doors need adding when I get them before i can paint the area and add the railings.

A bit more progress on the funnel. I have only worked on one side so far. I have added some scrap etch (the kit supplied anchor cover) to the horn mount to add a grating look. you could actually replace the top section of the kit part with grating the plastic block that appears twisted is the motor housing for the lift. I used the MK1 failing for this section. The two lockers supplied in the kit have a countersunk back, so the one that faces out had to be filled. i have added the electrical boxes and some of the cable, a bit more to do and what looks like a clackson? which i made from a bit of plastic rod and the tip of a cocktail stick. some of the ladders and grab rails are now in place also.

I have used all the kit etch on the funnel except the ladders and the walk way that sits under the search light pod as the Eduard etch has a nice grated deck to it.

Just a note on the crane platform. Both Eduard and MK1 replace the plastic kit part with a perforated etch deck. again both use a fold to double the thickness. Interestingly the Eduard part has a hole for the lift they don't supply Confused

but makes for a good dimension guide. There are a lot of ribs under the platform which MK1 faithfully reproduce but Eduard go for a truly horrid 2D solution. I will be using the MK1 part.

Excellent work Jase, makes me want to get back to my Hatchette Bismark. It got mothballed when we moved house a couple of years ago but too many other projects on the go at the moment
