I have constructed a spreadsheet of the additional contents of each of the 120 Magazines. This contains only the additional material and not the construction details.

The spreadsheet is split into

Serial,Issue No, Page No, Description of article, Section

I have converted the spreadsheet into a table so that it can be easily sorted into whatever order you may like. This should make it easier to find a particular article.

You will need Excell to read it and I have deliberatly saved it in an older version of Excell (2003) to enable those with older versions to open it.

Unfortunatley I cannot upload an XLS file to this site, so if you would like a copy then PM your email address and I will send you a copy.

This sounds like a good Excel (or similar) spreadsheet project for someone who has the time and patience to do it.
I've already made a spreadsheet of the construction stages in each issue for all 120 issues, which included the work involved in each issue, the issue number that those stages were published in followed by a tick box for stages completed.
I'm sure it wouldn't take much more time to expand that spreadsheet to include any or all the articles that were of interest. The only investment would be a little spare time.
Happy building

I was thinking of this too.

Could you send me a copy of your spreadsheet with say just the first couple of entries and the headings, and I'll see if I can adapt to include a contents.

I would be happy to make it available to everyone then assuming DeAg don't whine about copyright issues.

Making your own list of something that does not exist, does not breach copyright.

So min effect you become the originator of the work, and can therefore claim copyright of it, just as long as you state it is copyright protected. Which in this instance is unecessary if you are happy for your work to go out to the masses and be copied onwards via whatever means.
The danger is that having done the hard work and not protected it, you are then giving leave for anyone to publish it as being their own work, and even make gain from it.

As for DeAg whining about copyright, they or anyone else have every right to protect their work.

Even if the words used are the titles of articles that already exist in the magazines?

Hello John,

I would of thought it was obvious that they are nothing more than 'words' as you put it and since there is no copyright (yet) on the use of the English Language either in free speech or written text, then it is also blatantly obvious that you are free to use the same words as DeAg or anybody else for that matter since they are ... JUST words!? BlinkWinkHuh

If you were to use DeAgostinis' name (which is likely registered as a trademark) or tried to suggest that the index was published by, or involved them in any way, when they weren't, then you may well indeed be in breach of copyright, or possibly in breach of libel laws depending on how you worded things? There is nothing wrong with making a list/index of your own design and then if you wish, selling it or making it freely available just as long as you omit any reference to DeAgostini and aren't worried about who uses or copies your own work? You are only making a list after all? My wife does that with the shopping every week and as yet I've not heard from any solicitors about "your wife wrote her list out the same as my clients' wife"!! LOL LOL Wink

Now that is cleared up John, can I just suggest that you try to be a bit more positive and less derogatory when you post as it seems to me that you have been very negative on this thread? Not only have you made it look like it is DeAgostini's fault that there is no index, when it plainly isn't, but you have also suggested in post #12 that it was purely a "money making exercise" to which I can only say, so what if it is? They are in business to make money otherwise they would be registered as a charity wouldn't they? I have explained in an earlier post the reasons why they probably wouldn't have included an index from the start, which was based on viability, costs and profits.

You then made a further negative comment towards DeAgostini when you said in post #22 that you "didn't want DeAgostini to start 'whining' about copyright issues!? In answer to that one I can only say that they would have every right to protect their work be it intellectual or otherwise, as Tom has also said? The simple fact is that companies OR individuals, can spend a lot of money on copyrighting and protecting their work and they don't want somebody else coming along and possibly taking benefit, monetary or otherwise, from the work and expense that they have already put into it - which is why Copyright Laws are in existence in the first place? If you owned something under copyright and someone else tried to use it for their own gain would you not pursue your right to protect it from being stolen or used without your permission? And would you be best pleased when it was suggested by someone else that you were 'whining' about it when you were only protecting what is yours? I think not!! I do get annoyed when people think that because they've seen something they like they can then just go ahead and copy it!!

All I am saying John is that it isn't very nice to see such negative posts - god knows we had enough of that recently from 'Craig56' and The Sun newspaper? It just isn't wise to bite the hand that feeds you!!

Try putting all the words together from one of their articles, publish it on the internet and see what happen.

Many thanks for the rest of your fantastic advice.

Yes John, you are correct, if you copied their 'articles' from their magazines, word for word and included any trademarks or designs or suchlike that they owned, and it was obvious that you had done so, then they would (rightly) pursue you and it is likely that you'd be prosecuted under Copyright Law for stealing their 'Intellectual Property' - agreed!!

But you AREN'T as you say, "putting all the words together from one of their articles ..." are you? You are discussing the idea of JUST making a list or index of what is in one of their publications and allowing others to look at that list - and that list belongs to you since you will have made it - that's all!! IF DeAg HAD included an original index which they had written and designed, which you then copied, word for word and including any names or trademarks that they owned, then that is a different matter? Glare Glare

What you are intending to do by making your list is no different to an online bookseller listing his stock and including a list of the contents for each book? That is not a breach of copyright, he is just telling people what they might expect to find in that book and the only way he can do that is by using words from the English Language!? Simples!!!!! Blink Glare

However the list would by definition include the titles of the articles.

How many words do you need for plagiarism to kick in?
