Hi,

Finally completed the gun ports on the other starboard side over the weekend, which then enabled me to start on the sapele secondary planking.

marked the lines out as per the instructions. I then used pins stuck into the hull on the lines to help support and locate the first row of planking. I sanded the edges and ends with very fine sandpaper and then used a permanent black marker for caulking.

Glue was then brushed onto the strip and positioned into place and held there for a minute or so, but the glue was not adhering. Read in Alan's diary about the same issue and was resolved by sanding the hull with a very fine sandpaper. I did this and it seems to have done the trick. leaving over night to see if it bonds totally.

Pictures below.

Please feel free to comment.

Thanks for looking.

Hi Alan & Martyn,

Thanks for looking in and the kind comments.

Checked this morning and the planks do not feel like they are going anywhere. The sanding with P400 seems to have worked and given the hull a silky smooth finish!

Hi,

a little more progress. After the glue had cured on the first row of Sapele planking, the glue had bonded very strongly. I cut the cannon ports where the planking had over lapped and gently filled into the shape of the aperture.

I then glued the second layer on both sides covering the cannon ports to be cut out tomorrow once the glue has cured. Please see below.

Very nice Claret, be careful cutting the Sapele round the gunports, it is very brittle and breaks away quite easily..... Blink Blink

Keep up the good work...

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the nice reply and advise.

I had noticed the nature of the sapele. I have been using a new scalpel blade and cutting very carefully and filling as much as I can. no mishaps yet, but still plenty of cutting to go.

Hi,

Second row of sapele planking cut out around the cannon ports and the third row added.

Slow going using a scalpel, but I do not have a saw blade fine enough or small enough to use.
