I have started the Second Planking on the Lower Hull. Hopefully this week will see the arrival of Issues 38-41 and I can complete the Upper Hull Planking with the Black Boxwood. For the Lower Hull, I have toyed around with a number of ideas, Horse Chestnut (which I found was too difficult to cut into planks), Holly (which I couldn't find anywhere), so I've finally settled on 0.5mm x 5mm metre lengths of Maple from the Model Dockyard. Basically I wanted to avoid painting the Lower Hull White, but wanted a nice White Wood Finish (without lots of Butt Joints), to give contrast to the rest of the Ship and represent whatever anti-fouling gunk they were using at the time. I am Planking in single lengths of the Maple from Bow to Stern glued down with Aliphatic Resin and held in place to dry with Map Pins. Hopefully once it's sanded and treated the individual planks will be virtually invisible.

Beautiful work AndyBigGrin BigGrin your planking looks spot on.Are you enjoying working with the maple?I find it works alot nicer than walnut but not quite as hard as boxwood.Boxwood is rock hard,I probably used a scalpel blade every two gunports on my build, but is does bend like spring steelLOL LOL LOL

Thanks Nigel.
I love the Maple, it's not a wood I've used before, it cuts beautifully and although I haven't sanded it yet, I can tell it's going to have a lovely colour and finish. I haven't tried the Boxwood yet, but there's not too much of it. I'm also thinking of using African Padauk for the Gun Port linings.

You shouldn't have much problem with the black boxwood. The boxwood I used on the upper hull was 2mm thick, hence much funLOL LOL

Thanks Alan.
Quite tricky is very pleasing and very gratifying once it's in the past. I try to be philosophical about it and look at each plank or small group of planks as a mini project. Mostly it stops me from going off the railsLOL LOL

Maple Planking of the Lower Hull continues, this is slow but worthwhile work, as I'm going to be looking at his for a long while, I hopeLOL.
I have switched to Gel Superglue for the Planks as they turn up around the Stern as they are too difficult to pin. I've found that a short dip in hot water is adequate for the Maple to bend around this awkward curve.

Thanks Alan you're not wrong there, but I'm finding it strangely satisfying. Each plank is a little problem/project on it's own. Passes the time whilst I wait for my next delivery.LOL LOL

So I now have the measurements for the Black Boxwood Planking.
The build is now getting very interesting after the long slog of the Hull Blink Blink.
