Captain David wrote:Thanks Alan. Praise indeed, from an expert. Thanks for that David but have to tell you..... As my build diary title states...'My First Ever Build'..... This happens to be my first build so like you I am learning through trial and error, lots of research mainly through other build diaries and of course that touch of luck..... ... So will simply say, have a go and the best of luck to you..... Regards Alan

Final preparations before fitting the middle deck. Two more blocks on the centre line, slotted at the top so they fit under the deck support beams but come up to be level with the beams at either side. These are to give pinning points for the corners of the deck sections where 4 pieces meet ( above ribs 13 and 21). Then a block at each end. These have to be sanded to a sloping top face, to fit the rise in the decks. Next I drilled a hole at the aft end of the lower deck for cabling. If I decide to fit lights, this is where I will pull a string of LEDs through. The wiring run would go up through the keel, next to my display-mount point (between ribs 20 and 21), back though rib 21 which I have also drilled through, then up the hole in the deck and along the deck to the forward end. Later it will go up through the middle deck, then run aft and up into the stern cabins. My Xmas decs uded to include some strings of white LEDs about 1 1/2 metres long, run off AA batteries. These would be ideal - if I could find them Meanwhile I have used a bit of string, so I can attach the lights and pull through later. Captain David attached the following image(s):

Thanks Alan. I don't know if it's brave - maybe crazy! Anyway, I'm not committed to the lighting yet. That piece of string can stay there while I think about it.

Middle deck now fitted. To align everything properly, I dry-fitted all the deck sections. The drill bits used again to keep the mast holes lined up. Mark up for the pins into the blocks, then push pins in the deck sections, ready to push right down after glueing. Remove one deck piece, glue all available surfaces and the matching areas under the deck, refit and pin. Then take up the adjoining sections, in case they get accidentally stuck with the excess glue. Just in case the deck support beams were not sticking tightly, I clamped them up to the deck, on one side. Of course, I can't do this when I fit the opposite side but the beams should be up and in place by then. No need for weights on the deck with this method. Thanks Alan. Yes, it all went well. Leaving the ribs free to move (not glued to the stringers) meant that I could tweak them a bit to fit the next deck.

Stern Assembly. I have now added the decks and struts to the stern rib. This was not totally straightforward. First, the lower of the decks has slots for the under-brackets which are longer than needed, so it was impossible to know how to fit these parts as an assembly and then add it to the rib. Instead, I fitted the brackets to the rib first, then the deck, so the tabs on the brackets go in where they want to in the deck slots. The deck then clamped to the rib to keep the joint tight. The upper deck had the same issues - the slots being 2 or 3 mm longer than the tabs that fit into them, so I used the same method and ended up with a gap of 2mm forward of the tabs, 1mm aft of them. Then the side struts. These joints need a bit of modification. Nothing mentioned in the mag; Mr T's build mentions gaps to fill at the top. First, I bevelled the joints on the ribs. The manufacturing process gives us perfectly square-cut joints - but here, the struts meet the ribs at an angle. Bevelling gave me a better fit of the struts: they lie flush with the decks, give a closer fit for glueing and barely any gap at the top. There is, however, a gap at the bottom ends of the struts. Checking that my brackets(30) are still dead square to the rib, the struts are nice and flush to those brackets on the outboard edges, leaving a gap of 1mm inboard. This is where I did some packing, with some 1mm strip - supplied in issue 13 for the launch seats. Quite pleased with the result. Captain David attached the following image(s):
