Hi All,BigGrin

I`ve looked at some great ongoing builds and am interested in the black boxwood being used for the upper hull section.
So the questions :-

Varnish finish?
How much required?
Where from?
How much additional cost?
Ease of use?

Thanks in anticipation BigGrin BigGrin
Sorry if too many questions Confused

Too many questions DerekLOL LOL

From here http://www.originalmarquetry.co...egory_Wood_Veneers_1.htm where you'll see the price.

How much depends on the width you choose, but about 6-8 metres per side.

Varnish? What's the question?

Very easy to use, much easier than the Sapele.

Hi Court,Blushing

Sorry, trying to be to quick.
Question of varnish is about the best finish.

I am doing the painted version, but thought maybe a natural black veneer maybe better, but then again a mixture of finishes may not be such a good idea. Confused

Hi Derek,
I wasn't sure whether you were asking if I'd Varnished already. I haven't decided about my final finish yet.
The Boxwood looks really nice, even better than the photo's show. But I guess we're talking about another £20.

Cheers Court,BigGrin

The £20 can be covered, (I just won`t tell her LOL )but how will a painted lower hull mix with a varnished upper hull?

Never done this before hence the questions,Blink

Hi Derek,
If I paint then I would use Acrylics which I would coat with some kind of varnish anyway. But, you're going to have Bare Sapele Wood between the Lower Hull and the Upper Hull anyway.

Hi Del
I think if you are going for black boxwood bare sapele and a painted underside,I would paint the underside in acrylic paint and then varnish the whole lot in one go.My final finish is gonna be ronseal mattcoat sprayed on.75%varnish 25%white spirit. This is a clear polyurethane and will make the acrylic much more durable.
Hope this helps
Kind Regards Nigel

Hi Rob,BigGrin

What Nigel is saying above is that for my choice of painting/ varnishing, I need to varnish the whole hull in one go,after painting the lower hull and using black boxwood and sapele for the upper hull.

Hope this explains your query.

Think so.

Plank the hull, sapele and boxwood. Prime the lower hull, paint it, varnish everything. Correct?

Hi all
Yes varnish everything after the painting. As a note if you used brilliant white for the bottom, when you varnish it will yellow slightly and get rid of the garishness.
Kind Regards Nigel

I used both, but it was because I had ordered both. Because of the bend, the 4.5mm is easier to use.

When changing from Sapele to the black box wood. is it a straight swop of planking if so are there any dimensions. Or did you have to put in tappered sapele to achive a line before starting on the box wood. I havnt seen any dimensions for the painted black area yet in the magazines.

Hi Stu,
The Dimensions are given in Issue 39, which are basically the dimensions for masking for the Black Paint. I Tapered the Sapele to this line, the Boxwood then just curved to this, I didn't Taper any Boxwood.
