Hi Alan! Very good, the first half of your perfect planking is nearly finished! Be careful with the other side, maybe it´s a little bit difficult to get the same look, but I´m sure you will make this also perfect! Regards, Bernd

Hi there Alan! Just like to 'echo' all the other comments, your planking is so pleasing to the eye, to know that it's your first wooden ship makes it even more incredible! When you say you are going to leave the planks long at the stern for the stern post, do you mean that you're going to encase the post under the planks as well? You might have to be careful in that area, whilst I have no ref material for the SOTS, all the books I do have always show the stern post as a separate timber with the hull planking ending at the forward edge of it. If you plank over the post as well it might mean that the actual rudder will appear thinner than it should as the kit part will probably be the same width as the keel / stern post. (If you are intending to plank the rudder as well there shouldn't be a problem though!) Best wishes and keep up the fantastic work! Regards, Bernd Thank you Bernd, not quite perfect planking but for a first attempt am very happy with how it is turning out.... .. Agree with you, the next challenge is to try and get the other side to look the same but think will be a few evenings yet before I get to starting the other side.... Regards Alan

Regarding the stern piece, it is my intention to fit the stern piece with a small overlap with walnut planking and to plank the stern piece again in walnut but in one piece going vertically up the stern piece.... ..I really don't want to resort to staining the keel even using walnut stain. Did think about the thickness of the rudder and having a look at the Italian build it shows the rudder to be planked with .6mm Sapele again in a vertical manner so providing the stern piece and the rudder are actually the same thickness then I can't see it being a problem.... .. Appreciate the heads up on it and thanks again for looking in.... Regards Alan

Well, a huge milestone has been reached for me today with the first side of the lower hull completely planked and although not perfect by any means I really like how it has turned out.... .. Have also trimmed up the stern planks and the sapele strip you see there is not glued, simply pinned in order to ensure I got a good fit between the walnut and the sapele.... .. Today I also finished drilling the holes for treenailing which I intend to start tomorrow evening, think this will keep me occupied for the next 3 evenings... looking forward to the tree nailing what diameter are your holes? I know you say it is not perfect but I have to say the planking looks fantastic Keep the picks coming loving the build. “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain
