Greetings to all,

My name is Christopher Thompson. I am in Pennsylvania, USA. I am not new to modeling but still a novice of ship building. I am currently building a 10' x 16' double deck HO railroad. The models on the layout are a mix of wooden, plastic, and resin structures. I have also built the USS Constitution back in my early days of college. She is not around any more as 3 moves and some storage time did her in. I am also about 50% done with the Star Trek USS Voyager with lighted interior.

I am now ready to build another sailing vessel. My 40th b-day is this month so I figured I would treat myself. As I still feel I am a novice to this side of modeling I really like the idea of each step being packaged separately. I have ordered the HMS Victory from the US rep. I did not have the option of the monthly subscription just big chunks or everything at once. I went ahead and bought the whole thing. This will allow me to progress as fast or slow as I want or can. I have been reading as much as I can here not only about the other Victory builds but also the other sail rigged ships. I am also considering purchasing a few of the books about ship building I have found.

I already plan to buy Mike's enhancement parts and I am waiting for the US rep to have the copper plates for the hull.

I am looking forward to this build. When the kit arrives I will start a build diary if you all are interested in another one.

Take care,
Christopher

Hi Christopher,

Welcome to the forum. I am sure that you will enjoy building the HMS Victory.
I have found the instructions to be superb, and any grey areas are more than covered in the forums.
Looking forward to seeing your build.

Kind regards,

Welcome to the crazy gang Christopher!

If you are looking for good quality books for info I would recommend the following:

"The Period Ship Handbook" and "Period Ship Kit Builder's Manual" both by Keith Julier, (lots of tips and hints in there)

"The 100 Gun Ship Victory", part of the Anatomy of the Ship series by John McKay (great for plans and dimensions if scratch building extra details)

"HMS Victory, Her construction, career and restoration" by Alan McGowan, (probably the best source of line drawings for all the complicated rigging -and there's miles of the stuff!)

Also, visit the Caldercraft / Jotika website (UK) (makers of the best Victory on the market) and download all their free photos and Pdf manuals, they're a great help and the most authentic Trafalgar period details available.

Best of luck and looking forward to your diary!

Greetings,

Thank you for the kind replies. I am looking forward to this adventure. I will indeed look for these books. I have a local new/ used book store that I go to. The owner is good at finding the books at good pricing.

The tracking number says the package should be here on Friday. If UPS delivers on time I may try to get a picture of everything still packed and start my build thread.

Take care,
Christopher
