On 3 July 1938, the A4 class locomotive Mallard raced down Stoke Bank at 126mph to set a new steam locomotive world speed record. That record still stands.
2013, marked the 75th anniversary of Mallard's achievement and the National Railway Museum marked the event with a series of commemorative events, including spectacular opportunities to see the record breaker united with its five surviving sister locomotives - a family reunion on an international scale!
Only six of the 35 A4 locomotives built survive. The NRM temporarily repatriated two of them from their home museums in Canada and the USA.

Thanks for the info Tomick,I might have to have a wander up to see these glorious wonderful engines in person. I didnt know any partwork company was or had been looking at doing an A4.I think Deag might have to step into the breach and bring us one of these. If it was made by the same company that is making the D51 (which is really nice quality) and in the same scale.......now that would be something! Second thoughts, best not,as Id have to have three-the Mallard for obvious reasons, another just to show off the brass or painted in the cream/grey and red colour scheme of Silver Fox,and ofcourse Sir Nigel Gresley after the great man himself. So please DONT bring any out as my bank balance couldnt cope Jon

Lucky you,i'm extremely jealous now Kinghorn...isn't that near Kirkcaldy? Was over that way many many moons ago when I was a Sea Scout...can't remember why though it must have been important at the time as we didn't normally travel that far. Polished, oiled and gleaming, the six 100-ton steam locos lined up side by side for one last time in a display named the 'Great Goodbye' at the National Railway Museum’s site at Shildon.
The last chance to see all six A4 loco's together before the repatriated locomotives return to their home museums in late Spring/early Summer 2014.

Hi All, I saw these great icons at York and even though I`m anything but a train buff, it was awesome seeing them all together. So, if you haven`t seen them and can get to Shildon it`s got to be a good place to visit and like York entrance is free. A win win situation Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"
