So at long last I am finished issue 37 so now its on to issue 38 and I have to say it feels soooooo good to be back to doing some building.... Checked the fret and parts for any damage or warping and made a start on constructing the gallery.... Removed part 60 from the fret, cleaned off all the black ash with a fine file and test fitted, found I had to sand a little off the sides to ensure a good fit.... Glued and clamped in place plus I added some additional waste cuts to give the piece extra support... While waiting to dry, removed part 59 and again cleaned off the black ash.... Test fitting revealed there was more of an overhang on the right side, this meant I had to sand a little off the left side of each of the securing lugs to ensure a balanced fit... When happy I once again glued and clamped in place.... Am also going to add additional support pieces to increase the amount of surface area for gluing and attaching the rear most stern piece... Feel this piece will have to support a lot of metal ornamentation and I want to ensure it is fully secured..... Will continue with the fitting of the gallery tomorrow evening.... Happy building all.... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Wonderful work Alan I think you should be justifiably proud for what you have accomplished I think you will find it will look even better when you put some finish on(I wouldn't leave it too long because it will protect the wood from little knocks, greasy finger marks etc etc)as it will darken the cocktail sticks quite a bit as its end grain thats on show. Kind Regards Nigel

Kind Regards Nigel Thanks Nigel for the very kind comments... I am proud of my first attempt but more importantly the learning process was superb and thoroughly enjoyable... .. Am experimenting on the finish and I won't be doing any more to the hull until after the top and the band have been painted and the wales fitted.... Hull still has to have a final fine sanding.... .. In relation to the finish, I have some strips finished off with matt varnish, sanding sealer and one with sanding sealer plus a coat of varnish..... Still not sure which one to go with.... ... decisions, decisions eh..... Regards Alan

"Just been on the news, UK heading for a cocktail stick crisis as stocks run out!!" It wasn't me! I only took the one! Honest!! You could be right about a very secure stern for the decoration there Alan, maybe you should get some lead ballast for the bow lined up!! Lovely work M8 Robin First wooden ship: The Grimsby 12 Gun 'Frigate' by Constructo Second: Bounty DelPrado Part Works Third: HMS Victory DelPrado Part Works 1/100 scale Diorama of the Battle of the Brandywine from the American Revolutionary War Diorama of the Battle of New Falkland (unfinished sci-fi), Great War Centenary Diorama of the Messines Ridge Assault Index for the Victory diary is on page 1

Regards Claret Thank you for the very positive comment Claret, always appreciate you looking in.... ... Cocktail stick manufactures are truly baffled by the reported shortage, never happened before in the history of cocktail stick manufacturing.... .. Personally I blame Robin (Plymouth57) for openly advertising the use of the last one..... Regards Alan

Oh and thanks for the admission of guilt in using the last cocktail stick.... you can expect the knock on the door from the investigators.... Regards Alan

Hi Alan, Need to keep this low key, cocktail stick shares rocketing, could make a killing I'd we keep it to ourselves As said before, keep up the great work, trail blazing for us 'beginners'. I will post my progress tomorrow, although the basswood is to as striking as the alternative you have used! Regards Claret Also working on: SOTS. Moebius 1/32 Flying Sub with PE & lights.

Regards Claret Thanks Claret, not sure about trail blazing as I appear to be falling further behind and finding it difficult to keep up with the issues but, its not a race so have plenty of time.... .. Will be watching out for your posts to see your progress... Regards Alan

Today I managed to continue with the build instructions in issue 38... Completed fitting the gallery decks ensuring they were in line with the side panel openings... .. Also added a couple more bracing pieces and additional gluing pieces to give more surface area for gluing the rearmost gallery panel.. Gandale attached the following image(s):

Next came the fitting of the rearmost gallery panel. Dry fitting showed there to be a gentle curve on the lower edge of the panel and to achieve this I used an electric plank bender ensuring I didn't apply too much pressure as I didn't want to split or crack the piece.. .. Once I was happy with the curve I glued a length of bamboo strip along the bottom edge and held in place with clamps... ensured the bamboo strip didn't interfere with the fitting... . Finally glued and clamped the panel in place... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Once everything was set, I dry fitted the side panels as per the instructions and marked out the area to be left free of planking... .. Completed the second planking and now left to dry... intend to trim up, cut the gun ports and of course back to some treenailing before moving on to completing the other side.... Gandale attached the following image(s):

|
Finally for today I applied a generous coating of PVA along the inner joints (topside and underside) of the rearmost gallery piece and the deck pieces... Feel sure now I have a good secure fit to take the weight of the metal ornamentation.... Happy building all.. Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
